Okay, So in I was totally sucked in by an author sponsored Advert on Instagram back in 2023.. I started reading the book while camping, IRL distractions abounded and I finally finished the book in Q1 of 2024. -- Unleashed is book 1 in Emily Kimelman's Sydney Rye Mystery series. I was caught immediately by the concept, dog walker turned detective after running afoul of a murder, it was just a little strange and nuanced unlike so many other series. The story was compelling and Joy, the female protagonist (NOT named Sydney Rye) was incredibly likable, the right amount of snarky, and tough as nails (hides her pain till she gets home kinda tough). By the time Sydney makes her first appearace in the final chapter, I was definitely hooked on the duo of Joy and her massive dog Blue. I highlighted one of my favorite lines, it just stuck with me because me and gum are not friends. "There are rumors that you found the body," she whispered, leaning toward me, attempting to create an intimacy between us. Her breath smelled like she'd been chewing bubble gum. A strange scent on a full-grown woman. My only complaint is the time in which I found this book. Released in 2011, and the Sydney Rye series has grown seventeen more books since the release of Unleashed. At an avg of 300 pages per book, it would like dedicating myself to half of the Wheel of Time series.. For a slow reader like me, I guess I should just focus on the next book? Also included is a recording of the advert.. I dunno why, sometimes I record things like that.. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

HTML: A girl and her dog exact justice with a vengeance. Blue was as tall as a Great Dane but much skinnier, with the snout of a collie, the markings of a Siberian husky, the ears and tail of a shepherd, and the body of a wolf with one blue eye and one brown. Crouched in a sitting position, unable to lie down or sit up all the way, he looked at me from between the bars, and I fell in love. I adopted Blue from the shelter, and everything in my world changed... When I brought him home I wanted something in my life that was worth holding on to. I'd just broken up with my boyfriend and picked up a dog-walking gig on the Upper East Side. I was young and lost...normal. I was still Joy Humbolt. I'd never even heard the name Sydney Rye. Never seen a dead body, gotten beat up, or shot at. I didn't set out to be a heroâ??couldn't have imagined becoming a vigilante. But I don't regret what I've done... the lives I've saved or the ones I've taken. P.S The dog does not die in this series. *The Sydney Rye series has been downloaded over a million times. Recommended for adults who love brave female protagonists, dogs, and action-packed series that you can't put down until you've read them all. If you have trouble with the f-bomb, violence, or sex (not graphic but out of wedlock).. then you shouldn't start this series....it's just not your thing. If you're looking for your next adventure, you've found it.* Download this book today because you love powerful women, gritty mysteries, and heroic dogs. Join the adventure! On one hand, it's a good start to a series, and does a lot of heavy lifting to set up the Sydney Rye character before she's even officially Sydney Rye. It's also well written, and the narrator did a fantastic job.
On the other side, for me at least, it really did feel like a touch too much set up for a rushed ending. There was a lot of complicated stuff going on for Joy (the eventual Sydney) to figure out and there were times when I felt very much like we were being led down blind alleys. Joy (again, to me) seemed to stumble upon developments more than she worked them out.
And, while I appreciated the author's takes on some of the irritating people in the world—the homophobic, the uber-religious, the people who serve people for a living, but hate their jobs—I did feel that it got a touch heavy-handed at times, though I was pleasantly surprised with the final meeting between Joy and her mom.
I think this is very likely an enjoyable series, and the right audience is going to love it. I just don't think I'm the right audience. ( )
