NCLA Review: Athol Dickson has authored seven previous novels and a memoir. He has been recognized for his literary achievements with three Christy Awards and an Audio Award. The main protagonist is Sheridan Ridler, a somewhat shallow albeit talented artist and painter. After a near-death experience where he nearly drowns in the Harlem River, he glimpses eternity. He wants to capture what he calls “the glory” on his canvas. He literally goes on a twenty-five year quest to find answers to explain his experience from holy men from many religions around the world. For all that time he was presumed dead until rumors surfaced indicating that the famous artist Sheridan Ridler was still alive. Two people become obsessed with searching for him: the daughter he never knew and the murderer who hit him on the bridge all those years ago. This is a very well-written book and suspenseful. However, this is not a book for every audience. It is so laden with philosophical questions and intellectual musings and symbolism that it is most appropriate for a highly educated and sophisticated audience. Also at times the jumping back and forth in time became confusing. It is not an easy book to read and digest the meaning. A list of discussion questions is included as well as an interview with the author. Rating: 2 —MF ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
A great artist is cast into the icy Harlem River by a hit-and-run driver. His heart stops, and he sees something that defies description. Presumed dead by all who knew him and obsessed with the desire to paint the inexpressible, he embarks on a pilgrimage to seek help from holy men around the globe. But is it possible to see eternity without becoming lost within it? After a quarter of a century, when the world begins to whisper that he may be alive, two people come looking for the artist: the daughter he never knew existed, and the murderer who hit him on the bridge all those years ago.
