Alternate history books can be wildly fanciful to the point of stupidity, or as accurate as one can be when diverging from reality after an event takes place.

Thankfully Himmer's War falls into the latter category where after a errant B17 bomber accidentally kills Adolf Hitler, his henchman Himmler, the little chicken farmer, takes over the Third Reich and the war effort.

I found it interesting both from a thought experiment perspective and from an entertainment perspective. I was pleased the novel also flowed logically with facts as they were known, not fancifully inventing things but merely reordering some events and developments in a manner they potentially could have occurred after the first divergence event.

Overall - an enjoyable alt history read. ( )

It was a fun read, a welcome alternative during the reading (or better the studying) of a tough book: Stella del mattino. I liked it more than the last two parts of Turtledove's WWII series.
There are, however, some flaws: all the non American characters are flat and the bias against the French ones is obvious. Some turning points are too quick and lack of plausibility ((the dealings with Stalin and the Skorzeny's mission) or worse deny the historical background, like Heisenberg's success in making an atomic bomb. ( )

Hitler is killed by a stray bomb not long after the Normandy invasion, and Himmler takes over as Fuhrer. The war continues, on a slightly different course.

Conroy's alternate histories are all interesting takes on military history, but his characters leave something to be desired. This is one of his less successful examples, although still readable. ( )
