'Mr Kitchin is an enjoyably ruthless writer.' - Punch 'Ten Pollitt Place is written in another language. It is another world. . . . T]he observation is delightful. It is beautifully done.' - The Observer 'Mr Kitchin is still writing the traditional, well-bred, upper-English-middle-class novel. He does it finely, with a loving art.' - The Spectator 'Before the end of this year someone in this house is going to die.' This is the terrible prophecy of fifteen-year-old Hugo, who possesses an uncanny gift of second sight. But who will it be? Maybe old Miss Tredennick, seventy-six, whose outrage at the prostitute across the street could bring on a stroke. Or perhaps aging novelist Justin Bray, once popular, but increasingly ignored by critics and booksellers. Then there are the Fawleys, trapped in a loveless marriage that Mr Fawley wants to escape so he can marry the housekeeper, Magda. Or could it be Hugo himself, the disabled boy with an unrequited passion for the man who collects the garbage? As year's end approaches and each character's personal tragedy unfolds, tensions are high at Ten Pollitt Place, while everyone wonders which of them may not live to see the new year. . . . An unjustly neglected novelist, C.H.B. Kitchin (1895-1967) was best known for his early mystery novels and was frustrated later in life when he continued to turn out minor masterpieces like Ten Pollitt Place (1957) and The Book of Life (1960), which were largely overlooked by critics and the book-buying public. This first-ever reprinting of Kitchin's brilliant novel includes a new introduction by Simon Stern and reproduces the original jacket art by Val Biro.… (meer)

A forgotten story out of print for a long time and deservedly brought back by Valancourt Books gives an account of the residents of the posh apartment house at Ten Pollitt Place. The building and neighbourhood was based on Kitchin's own neighbourhood at 23 Montpelier Street (where, coincidentally Thomas Hardy lived in 1870) and is described well enough that it may be recognized by locals. Harrod's appears as Garrow's department store where Dorothy Fawley shops and has lunch. Justin Bray, a less than successful author, resembles Kitchin enough that he could be seen as a self portrait. Hugo, a disabled teenager with an odd crush on the dustman, predicts that someone in the house will die within the year. The dated chapter headings work as a countdown through a dismal Christmas to a dramatic turn at the end of the year. There is much to ponder over in this ostensibly simple story that reveals more complexity as it progresses. Kitchin is better known for detective novels, which is what drew me to his work, but this muted story is my favourite of what I've read so far. ( )

Valancourt Books has said that "it was time for a publisher to use modern technology to restore widespread access to rare, neglected, and out-of-print literature." And since 2005 that is exactly what they have been doing. One of their more recent efforts is the revival of the long out of print Ten Pollitt Place by C.H.B Kitchin. A minor masterpiece written in 1957, it includes a new introduction by Simon Stern and reproduces the original jacket art by Val Biro.

The denizens of 10 Pollitt Place are miracles of characterization and depth. Fifteen-year-old Hugo, seemingly endowed with second sight, has prophecied that "before the end of this year someone in this house is going to die.' Suspense builds thru the course of the novel, heightened during the tensions caused by the Christmas season and as the New Year approaches. Will it be old Miss Tredennick, compelled by age and ill health to remain in her room, whose outrage at the prostitute across the street could bring on a stroke. Other tenants include the past-his-prime novelist Simon Bray, the Fawleys, trapped in a loveless marriage that Mr Fawley wants to escape so he can marry the housekeeper, Magda. Magda's mother, Mrs Muller or perhaps Hugo himself, a complex, disabled boy with an unrequited passion for the dustman? Tension builds thru the course of the novel and as the year progresses and only when we have run out of pages does the final resolution occur. ( )
