I think this is a great book to read to children to learn about voting, especially in election years. The principal of Amelia Bedelia's school tells her class that they can come up with rules for the school and whichever one gets the most votes, he'll make an official school rule. The book teaches students what words like ballot, runoff, and absentee ballot mean within the context of the book. For example, one girl was absent from school and couldn't vote in person, but when her mother came to pick up her homework, she also dropped off a note to the teacher that said which rule she votes for. The book shows how excited the children are to vote and I think it's great that the author gives an example of how exciting and important it is to vote. ( )

This chapter book discusses the process of voting, but explains it with simplicity and at a level that 1st through 3rd graders could understand. After a run in with the principle Amelia Bedelia is given the task to have the students create a set of rules to vote on and the principle will implement that rule into their school. The children endure the voting process, after all votes are cast there is a tie, and in the end an absentee vote is counted for one child who is gone that day. This book provides hidden humor and a great lesson for students. Using this book during an election period would be a wise decision. The students could learn more about the candidates, who votes, when do they vote, and how it all works. This book may also be encouraging to students who thrive to create a better community within their school. The illustrations portray a very patriotic sense. Which also could bring in history of our country. ( )

This is a great tale in the way it presents the concept of voting. Amelia Bedilia has a personality that relates to so many students, and her curiosity enhances the way that students learn new concepts from her adventures. This story talks about Amelia making a deal with the Principal that whatever rule her classes votes on democratically, he will allow it to happen in the school. Eventually students decide on a new rule after a long elimination process and a tie.

I liked this book because it was able to give children an idea of how voting occurs in an easier way. The author was very organized throughout the book and the story flowed very well. The illustrator was also able to illustrate the book very well according to what was happening in the scene. A great example of this would be when Amelia Bedelia was "hugging" every corner of the race and the illustrator showed Amelia actually hugging every corner of the school. ( )
