This classic work by psychologist and social philosopher Eric Fromm builds upon his previous popular book To Have or to Be? The Art of Being teaches us to avoid the tantalizing illusions of our consumer-driven world by learning to function as a whole person from a state of inner completeness or being. The transition from an identity of having to being creates a state of enlightened psychological and spiritual happiness. Fromm observes that the modern person is less a self-reflective being than a composite of data promoted by the mass media, and he encourages us to pursue true self-awareness beyond simple political, ideological, and religious clichés. By learning to be centered in the self, the individual is less swayed by the endless pressures and dissatisfactions of the culture of consumeris… (meer)

Aristotle on nostrils is quite a revelation. ( )

I listened to this on my morning commute. I am working through these Philosopher in 90 minutes audio books as a way of developing basic knowledge of foundational philosophers, their work, their life, and their time in history. These short works are great for this purpose. I wish Aristotle's ideas of episteme, techne, and prudencia as different ways of knowing had been addressed. ( )

Eh, it was okay. This is the fourth "90 minute" book I've listened to (audiobooks), and it felt less insightful than the others. I was hoping for a little more content and summarized material on Aristotle's thought than he gave. If you know nothing at all, maybe a decent place to start, but there are probably better books to reference. ( )

Another Audible.com free book from the "Channels" program and another slow day in the shop.

Aristotle is responsible for the beginnings of scientific classifications of plants and animals. He is also known as the father of logic. He is also accidentally created metaphysics. When his works were being put together subjects were recorded as geology and physics. The section after physics was called in "after physics" or in Greek metaphysics. His writings and interest were well rounded and much more diverse than Socrates or Plato. He even expanded out into psychology -- memory and dreams.

Aristotle's work was lost to the west for five centuries. It was Thomas Aquinas who is responsible for returning Aristotle to the West. He blended Christian theology with Aristotle which was translated from Arabic.

This is a 90 minute that just does not do justice to the philosopher. 90 minutes is just not enough time. It is also more of a biography than a philosophy lesson. ( )
