History. Juvenile Nonfiction. Humor (Nonfiction.) HTML:

The Donner Party expedition is one of the most notorious stories in all of American history. It's also a fascinating snapshot of the westward expansion of the United States, and the families and individuals who sacrificed so much to build new lives in a largely unknown landscape. From the preparation for the journey to each disastrous leg of the trip, this book shows the specific bad decisions that led to the party's predicament in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The graphic novel focuses on the struggles of the Reed family to tell the true story of the catastrophic journey.

This popular topic is a perfect addition to the Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales brand, and a great showcase for Hale's storytelling skills.

Praise for Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales: Donner Dinner Party

"This informative graphic novel capitalizes on enticingly gross history to great effect, balancing raw facts with strong storytelling."

This history of the Donner Party in graphic novel form tells the tale of the settlers' (colonizers) westward journey from Springfield, Illinois toward Sutter's Fort, California. Not all of those in the wagon train survived, and some, faced with starvation, ate the dead bodies of others to stay alive. Like the Titanic, this story holds gruesome fascination, and like Titanic, there were a number of decisions that could have been made to avert the appalling outcome: particularly, if James Reed had not insisted on taking the Hastings "shortcut" instead of the regular route. Hale crams a lot of text and images into small panels in a small trim size, and uses his framing device (Nathan Hale, spy, about to be hanged, telling his hangman and British soldier (his)stories, Scheherezade-style) for commentary, humor, and pointing out how people are sometimes more upset at the thought of the dog dying than people dying. First class history, and the graphics really help encompass the scope of this tragic incident. ( )

A good explainer for the curious. Balances the gore with humor, a.self-aware book ( )

This informative graphic novel chronicles the disastrous Donner Party expedition. Focusing on the journey through the eyes of the Reed family, the travelers meet with one calamity after another as they strike West, due to poor planning and bad decision making.

Maybe 3.5 stars. Not having read any other books about the Donner Party, I can't say for sure how the story could be "improved" upon given whatever information was made available (or survives) from the mid-19th century. I found at least half of this chronicle rather tedious...it picked up once things started getting *really* dire in the Sierra Nevada, but still, all in all it is certainly a tale more for the sheer grisliness of events rather than much in the way of character development. Apart from James Reed, Salvador, Luis, and Charles Stanton (maaaaybe Virginia Reed at the beginning?), the rest of the party became one amorphous doomed bunch. The fretting hangman, though, was pretty cute (WHAT ABOUT THE PETS???!!!!!!!). Still, I can see the appeal. I certainly would have liked this gruesome tale when I was in grade school and will be sure to pass along to my similarly twisted patrons. ( )
