The Cover of Snow is an easy read if you don’t try to follow the convoluted plot. These mysteries always start with an excellent premise. Nora finds her cop husband dead from suicide. The entire novel focuses of the why he did it. Fine. But as the red herrings fly and the standard cliché character multiply, you can either stop reading or go with the flow. An evil mother, an autistic boy man, a relentless reporter and suspicious cops all manage interact with Nora. There are enough suspense twists to give you a morsel of satisfaction. The writing has potential so maybe there is a glimmer of hope for Jenny Milchman’s next book. ( ) Not a bad first novel. I think the author has a good sense of pace, and story beats, and what keeps us page-turning. But she needs to develop her skill in dialogue writing. Some of the dialogue was downright confusing, and an editor should have addressed that. There were occasional turns of phrase that were misused - again, the book lacked polish. That being said, it's still not a bad little mystery. Don't set your expectations too high, and you won't be disappointed. If she writes another, I'll probably give it a shot to see if she's improved. I tried to read this book, I really tried hard. But after the seventh chapter I just could not read it anymore. The book is 'scatter brained'. That is the only way I know how to describe it. It's not only the characters in the book, but the writing style itself comes off as hit and miss or "scatter brained". I don't know if that was the intention of the author or not, but I found it hard to keep my interest in the storyline and the actions of the characters and finally just set the book aside. 2.25 stars. When Nora wakes up one morning, she discovers her cop husband, Brandon, has killed himself. Nora had no idea this was coming, and she must find out what led to it. While doing so, she uncovers not only personal secrets her husband kept from her, but also some disturbing things covered up by the small local police force. I listened to the audio, and sadly, the narrator had a very monotone voice that did not keep me interested at all, though it sounds like something that should be interesting. I did hear some of the secrets that were uncovered at the end... maybe they were meant to be exciting twists and turns, but I missed so much in between that it just wasn’t all that interesting. It started interesting -- and even having now finished it – I do wonder what led Brandon to kill himself...? I’d kind of like to just find a summary with all the spoilers.

HTML:WINNER OF THE MARY HIGGINS CLARK AWARD Jenny Milchman’s Cover of Snow is a remarkable debut, a gripping tale of suspense in the tradition of Gillian Flynn, Chris Bohjalian, and Nancy Pickard. Waking up one wintry morning in her old farmhouse nestled in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, Nora Hamilton instantly knows that something is wrong. When her fog of sleep clears, she finds her world is suddenly, irretrievably shattered: Her husband, Brendan, has committed suicide. The first few hours following Nora’s devastating discovery pass for her in a blur of numbness and disbelief. Then, a disturbing awareness slowly settles in: Brendan left no note and gave no indication that he was contemplating taking his own life. Why would a rock-solid police officer with unwavering affection for his wife, job, and quaint hometown suddenly choose to end it all? Having spent a lifetime avoiding hard truths, Nora must now start facing them. Unraveling her late husband’s final days, Nora searches for an explanation—but finds a bewildering resistance from Brendan’s best friend and partner, his fellow police officers, and his brittle mother. It quickly becomes clear to Nora that she is asking questions no one wants to answer. For beneath the soft cover of snow lies a powerful conspiracy that will stop at nothing to keep its presence unknown . . . and its darkest secrets hidden.
