I find this series fascinating and compelling, and a little on the dark side. More please! ( )

I’m so torn about this book, and this series on the whole.

For the first 80% of the book I couldn’t stop thinking about how every single thing that was happening absolutely did not need to happen. If Lucky would just speak up for himself and do what he know is right instead of trying desperately to make everyone else happy, things could get accomplished so much more quickly and all of the events in The Hidden Enemy could have been skipped.

Then the last fifth of the book happened. And it became clear that everything that happened had to happen in order to get the end point (and, in turn, the next book). It doesn’t change the fact that Lucky is one of the most frustrating characters I’ve ever read, but there is a better clarity.

I also am really pleased that the title actually refers to Lucky himself.

Personally, I like the wild pack more than the leashed dogs. I think they are more intriguing characters I hope the next book brings more back story on Alpha, Sweet, and Moon. ( )

Survivors: The Empty City is the second book in the Survivors series, by Erin Hunter. Lucky, the previous book's hero, returns to his pack, finding them fighting with a Wild Dog pack. His appearance is only noticed by Alfie, a member of Lucky's pack, who takes heart and tries to kill the half-wolf Wild Dog Alpha; but is killed himself. Bella has the Leashed pack retreat and meets up with Lucky, who she persuades to infiltrate the Wild Pack. Lucky agrees, and finds out that Sweet, his friend, is the Beta. Lucky slowly progresses through the ranks of the pack, however after one of his meetings with Bella, he is confronted by the Omega, and Lucky is forced to help the Omega become a higher status by framing another dog. Soon, Bella attacks with her pack, allied with the Foxes, but the Foxes begin to raid the food supplies and attack the pups of the Pack. Both packs attack the Foxes, and decide to merge so they can survive better. Omega exposes Lucky as a spy. To be continued in the next book!
This book was very interesting. This time, Lucky had to go through different moral problems. In the end, he also had to decide where his loyalties lies. Luckily, the foxes solved the problem, as all he had to do was defend Moon's pups from them. Lucky's feelings towards Sweet were also quite interesting. The Alpha was also quite an interesting character, but I feel like he wasn't shown in full splendour. I can't wait to read the third book. Carry on, Erin Hunter! ( )
