A history, or as the title states, a tribute to the village that disappeared in Dorset when it became a training area for American soldiers in World War II, the villagers never returning. There is an interesting section on the school including these snippets: Page 27 ‘At 9 a.m., the entire school assembled in the playground in a long line, to await the arrival of the rector the Reverend Claude Homan. The school’s largest boy or girl was chosen to stand by the front door, holding the Union Jack on a flagpole, as everyone marched around saluting the flag in turn’.

Page 26/27 ‘Sometimes in the winter when the gales blew and the snow lay on the ground, the children were ‘shrammed’ (the local word for frozen), and little Billy Wrixon would have to hang on to farm fences to avoid being blown away’.
