Pro Stock is a unique class of racing, and one that has changed considerably over the years. In its early years, Pro Stock was similar to the Super Stock era from a decade before, in that it featured cars that seemed to be a lot like a hot rod version of what people were driving on the street. While the engines were a little bigger and nastier than most street versions, they were not that far removed, and fans could really relate to cars like 'Cudas, Mustangs, Camaros, Mavericks, and Vegas going at it on Sunday afternoon. These mostly stock-bodied cars were, after all, what most fans wanted their own street version to be. Over the years, as always seems to happen in racing, the original vision morphs into something completely different, and in the case of Pro Stock, that meant tube frames and flip-up fiberglass bodies that resemble nothing seen on the street. And in that, there becomes a little bit of a disconnect with the fans, whose interest in Pro Stock originated in the relative stock appearance of the cars. For this reason The Dawn of Pro Stockby Steve Reyes is a celebration of the early years, when fans could really connect with the cars, and brand rivalries were intense. Legendary drag racing photographer Reyes was trackside at the biggest and best NHRA events from the mid 1960s throughout the 1990s. He had a unique perspective on the development of Pro Stock, as he was able to document the evolution of both the cars and drivers as he observed them throughout the season. For a genuine insider's view, Steve has gotten together the very best shots he had, and supplemented them with some great images from his contemporaries to offer this new collection. Steve's own observations punctuate the outstanding images to give the reader a trackside view of Pro Stock's early days unlike any offered before.… (meer)

This is a great book for a kid who lived for his monthly fix of Hot Rod Magazine.. I suspect it might even be attractive to those who came along later. The Dawn of PRO STOCK is filled with photos.. great photos in B & W and Color, of the cars that built the sport. Most of the cars in this book are from the Coasts, but they look a lot like what we were running in the Midwest at the time also.

Devouring the excellent photography of Steve Reyes in The Dawn of PRO STOCK will leave you with the lingering memory of hot asphalt, burning rubber and nitro-methane singeing the hair in your nostrils! ( )

For anyone interested in the sport of drag racing, Steve Reyes' The Dawn of Pro Stock is a nostalgic collection of photos and stories circa the 1970s. Reyes thoroughly covers all of the personalities and machines of the era in an intimate, personal style that makes you feel like you're right there at the track. ( )

Back in the late 1960s I used to go to Cordova, Illinois quarter mile drag strip at least once a month whenever the place was having events, also Kahoka, Missouri occasionally. Those were some of the most memorable and fun days of my life. Reading this book, along with all of the pictures brought back lots of great memories from a time that passed too quickly. It goes without saying that if you like the subject, you will love this book! ( )

For those interested in photography of drag racing, I would highly recommend this book. On the history front, I was less impressed. While it contains a great number of interesting facts, the book reads like a personal memoir in many places and doesn't provide the references that I expect from a historical volume. If you love racing (esp, drag racing), go for it. If you are you looking for a history of motor sports in America, go elsewhere. ( )

I don't know much about Pro-stock or cars, but thanks to this book, I do now. This is a great read for people looking into learning about the world and/or history of Pro-stock. I recommend it for those interested in learning it as well as for those who live and love that world of racing. ( )
