Scaredy Squirrel is not too comfortable with the idea of camping...unless it's on his couch! There will be no mosquitoes, skunks or zippers to worry about when he watches a show about the joys of camping on his brand-new TV. But first Scaredy must find an electrical outlet, and that means going into the woods! Will the nutty worrywart's plans prepare him for the great outdoors, or will his adventure end up as a scary story told around the campfire?

The neurotic, list-making squirrel whose story began in Mélanie Watt's Scaredy Squirrel, and then continued in five subsequent titles, returns here for his seventh adventure. Absolutely unwilling to endure the rigors of camping, from skunks to quicksand, Scaredy Squirrel comes up with a plan that will allow him to enjoy the pleasures of this outdoor activity inside. But when he decides to watch camping shows on television instead of actually camping, he realizes that he will need to plug in his TV, requiring him to make a dangerous journey through the nearby campground to the closest electrical outlet. Will his thorough preparations safeguard him, or will the unexpected blow him off course...?

This being the fictional world of Mélanie Watt, it comes as no surprise to discover that the path to sciurine security never did run smooth, and our hero encounters various obstacles on his journey that force him into a closer contact with the world than he might otherwise wish. As is always the case with Scaredy, this proves revelatory, as he is forced to discover the joys of camping. Of course this in no way implies (nor does it ever) that he has been reformed, or is any less paranoid about the dangers of the larger world. An amusing tale is paired with the usual fun illustrations in Scaredy Squirrel Goes Camping, which I would recommend to fans of the character, as well as to any young children who might themselves have some reservations about outdoor activities. When I mentioned that there weren't many books starring squirrels out there for kids, my coworker recommended this series. There was only this book in the series available at the library that day, but I gave it a read. It's the story of a squirrel who is scared of everything, but he's still a little cious and still wants to have a good life. In this book, he decides he wants to go camping. However, that's filled with lots of scary prospects, so he decides he'll just watch it on television. To plug the television cord in, however, he has to pass (and overcome) all the dangers of camping. He sets out, prepared with all sorts of things to get through scary obstacles... such as penguins. Because he is prepared, he actually does pretty well and realizes he was brave enough to make it through after all.

There are all sorts of morals at play here, but I found myself siding with the scared squirrel more than I probably should have. The world IS a dangerous place, buddy! And good for him for being overly, absurdly prepared! I can't fault him for that in any way!

This was cute and amusing, full of tons of details (I especially loved his packing list and the map to the electricity hookup). Fun and clever... and perhaps hits too close to home for me ;-) ( )

Scaredy Squirrel wants to go camping but without having to leave his tree. Thank goodness for television right! The only problem is he has to plug in the tv somewhere. Living in the forest doesn't give many electircal outlets so he has to plan a route to find one. On the way he finds a penguin and gets worried but makes friends with him. I love these books because all the pictures are detailed and cute. ( )

Just like the other Scaredy Squirrel books, this one features Scaredy Squireel going on a certain mission. In this book, he must plug in the extension cord to an outlet to watch a program about camping instead of him going camping because it is not safe.

Once more, this book had me laughing. The colors in acrylic make this book seem like a children's book. The artwork is really well done and it reflect what the author has written. The story is really amazing and I am always surprised at the end results. ( )

Scaredy Squirrel is overly prepared to go camping. He packs many random things to conquer his fear of camping. They are used in the most creative ways throughout the book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others. ( )
