The story is about a boy who is overwhelmed by frightening experiences, such as roaring lions, loud thunder, and other loud noises. The boy figures out a way to cope with these scary situations, he sits down and tells the scary noises to, “go away!” and when he opens his eyes he sees calm and beautiful images such as flowers and cuddling puppies. The message in this book is how we can turn a scary situation around with a change of perspective and positive thinking. There will be times in your life when things get hard and scary, but if you stay positive, then you will find the good in the bad situation and it will be okay in the end. ( ) Frightened by all manner of noises - from roaring lions to yelling fathers and hollering mothers -- the boy develops his own coping mechanisms for dealing with fear. "So I sit right down. Shut my eyes tight" (unp.) and take control. At first read, I thought the boy imagined the quiet things like flowers blooming and the ant in the grass, but on closer inspection, I saw the boy's amazing ability to shut out the fears and concentrate on the here and now. Would that we all have that ability. His own improved mood then touches the people he loves so the mother sings, the daddy dances. I can see this as a valuable book in the classroom about dealing with emotions, a useful book for parents, and also a great choice for counselors for bibliotherapy. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
