De top van Nazi-Duitsland in Neurenbergse cellen en Goldensohn als psychiater die met deze gevangenen gesprekken voert. Het boek levert geen nieuws. Daarnaast vraag ik me af of dat nu wel gepubliceerd kan worden. Toegegeven, de schrijver is overleden en heeft niets ondernomen om tot publicatie van zijn aantekeningen over te gaan en de mensen waarover het gaat zijn ook overleden, (vaak opgehangen) maar toch…. Enfin, de aantekeningen die tijdens de interviews zijn gemaakt geven een beeld van bange mensen, veelal niet bereid om ook maar enige verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor de daden die hen ten laste zijn gelegd en bovenal middelmatige burgermannen.
Historisch gezien is het een belangrijk boek, het geeft een inkijkje (of het mag of niet) en bevredigt ook een zekere nieuwsgierigheid. Het meest trof mij de beschrijving van Rudolf Höss, commandant van Auschwitz. Fascinerend, dat wel. ( )
