It’s a sports realistic fiction novel. Theo Rollins, Aka Sasquatch, has grown A LOT over the summer. The basketball coach sees him and makes him part of the basketball team. The problem is he doesn’t know how to play; he’s always been a “geek.” He’s on the Academic Bowl Team. He finds that he really wants to be on the team and learn how to play, so he goes to some public courts to play pick-up games and learn. Unfortunately, the time spent learning to play basketball hurts the Aca-lympics team. Theo’s mom passed away, so it’s just him and his dad. They often go to visit his grandmother who takes care of Theo’s cousin, Gavin. Gavin and Theo have a strained relationship. Gavin talks a lot and he talks big. Theo has little patience for it. When Theo has had enough, he tells Gavin that he doesn’t think Gavin actually writes music. Theo returns home and finds a CD of Gavin’s songs. They’re good, really good. Then the CD gets stolen. Theo is stressed. He is the “star” of the basketball team yet can’t play and may get kicked off; he’s behind in the Aca-lympics and may get kicked off that team; and, he’s accused of stealing and selling Gavin’s music. He has less than a week to get everything straightened out. I think just about anyone would like this book. It’s fun and I like the characters. I seriously doubt Kareem Abdul-Jabbar actually wrote it because it’s well written and has a great message. I think he gave some of the ideas for the book. I recommend it. Actual rating: 3.5 stars I groaned when I saw this sports book in my pile to review, but it surprised me by being readable, entertaining, and full of simple truths about growing up that I think any kid will recognize. Including my inner ten-year-old. The basketball scenes were described so well that I had no trouble picturing the action (even for someone who doesn't watch basketball much), and since main character Theo is on the school's "Aca-lypmic" trivia team as well as the basketball team, it's also chock-full of interesting facts about art, music, literature, and science. For younger readers not ready for Matthew Quick's Boy 21, I'd recommend this as a smart, well-written sports novel with a lot of heart. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Eighth-grader Theo Rollins' growth spurt has Coach Mandrake trying to transform him into a basketball star, but training time is hurting the science club's chances of winning the "Aca-lympics," and being accused of stealing could mean Theo is off both teams.
