Smith Jr. writes a fantastic book that highlights different cultures. The pictures in the book celebrate the diverse physical characteristics of different cultures. The language in the book uses quite advanced examples of different languages and words for distinct parts of different cultures from the word hello, to clothing items, foods, and dance. The definitions and the pronunciation of each of the new words is given in the glossary in the back of the book. I think that this is an excellent book for preschoolers to start introducing them to different parts of the world and the people, food, clothing, and customs that make each one of them special. Everyone makes up our beautiful world. This world is filled with all different types of people from all different backgrounds. This book shows different age groups from different countries. Each page shows a new child from a different part of the world. This text is poetry, and it has a good rhyme and rhythm. The illustrations are photographs, and really make the text go so much deeper because you can connect a story to a physical person you can see. this book was interesting because it showed children from every corner of the globe saying things like; I am the clickety-clack -clack of castanets in flamenco, I am the soul of kings, I am the bite in bratwurst. ir depicts children in an unusual form in this book and that's why I love it. ages 3-5 Source Pierce county library geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

I think this is a great book to read to a class to introduce and expose children to the different cultures that there are, and I think this book would be appropriate for a social studies classroom. There are some words in here that I did have trouble pronouncing, such as the different ways people say "hello", or some of the food names from different countries. I did find it helpful that there was a glossary at the end of the book to refer to, and I can see children using this book as a learning tool as well.
This is a different book from most that I have read because there are actual pictures instead of drawings, which I also found incredible. ( )
