When Sammy, a young Wilson's warbler, wakes up one frosty August morning near the Arctic Circle, he instinctively knows that it's time to make his first migratory journey south to Panama. But there's one problem â?? where's Panama? All the other warblers having left without him, Sammy sets off on his journey by himself, stopping to ask the same question of each of the different animals that he meets along the way: "Is this Panama?"From the caribou heading to his winter forest to the monarch butterflies flitting to Mexico, every animal has a different destination and different advice for Sammy on how to find his way. Great illustrations but the narrative would work better without the anthropomorphizing. ( )

Summary:
A story about Sammy who is a wislons warbler. It is a wonderful narrative and educational story about how birds migrate for the winter.Sammy could tell that it was getting colder and that he needed to head south for the winter. He wanted to fly to somewhere that it was warmer. He soon decides to fly to Panama, the only problem is that he doesn't know where panama is. As he is traveling on his adventure he runs into other animals that are also migrating, but they are not going to Panama. Your on an educational journey following Sammy on his way to Panama.

Personal: I think this is a wonderful book to read to children about the bird migration.

Classroom:1) Ask the students why they think the birds migrate.
2)Ask the students if they were a bird where would they migrate to.
3) Ask them what other animals they think migrate.

This book follows, Sammy, a young Wilson's warbler from the Arctic Circle to Panama during migration season. The reader learns about the extensive distance and all the things that can happen along the way. Beautifully illustrated, this book is full of detailed information, but NOT in an overwhelming way. This is a beautiful book! This is a migration story that would work really well in an elementary classroom read-a-loud, or before an animal science program in the fall.

The central character, Sammy, is adorable and easy to cast as a child during reading.

The back panels explain in a little more detail the different factual concepts that are woven into the story. ( )

Very interesting migration 'story' told from a warbler's perspective, but including many other migratory creatures, too. ( )
