Markos Adams is famous, but not for his flashy guitar chops, leading man good looks or homemade baklava. After a heavily publicized suicide attempt, he tries to get his life and mind back in order. The morning after his return to the stage, Markos's worst nightmare is realized when his daughter, Jessie, is abducted. The kidnapper contacts him with the terms of the ransom: Markos must identify who he is in twenty-four hours. If he fails, he must commit suicide. Markos races against the clock to unmask the kidnapper and starts to question his sanity when he experiences visions of Jessie singing to him. Is Markos slowly descending into madness, or is he the victim of a sadistic criminal act that  will force him to face his biggest fear...that he'll die before seeing his precious daughter again.… (meer)

I was given an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley to review and provide my honest opinion. Firstly, not beeing a jazz fan or having any real knowledge of it did not take away from the experience of this book. It was beautifully written, and quite captivating. And ! actually loved how jazz was the thread that pulled so many aspects of the story and the book itself togethe. I loved how the book was allocated to 'Sets' which depicted the three stages of Marcos Adamidis life and death. His struggle as a boy living in an abusive home; his struggles with drugs, his relationships and his own demons. As Marcos struggles to make sense of his death and his life, he continues the search for his daughter whose kidnapping lead to this juxtoposition. Marcos rediscovers his relationship with his ex-wife as he is forced to face the past and forgive himself. A remarkable story that holds you in its grip from the very beginning. ( )

Definitely one of those books you have to read while fully awake and without all of life's distractions vying for your attention. The story is endearing and the plot moves along nicely but the writing is overly complex, needlessly so. The speech didn't feel natural and I doubt anyone actually speaks this way. However, if you pay attention you just might love the book. I was generous in giving this four stars instead of three simply because the story is actually really good. ( )
