Jane Harper started out as an undercover whistleblower among a group of radical activists butting bulkheads with whaling ships in the Arctic Ocean. She ended up shipwrecked off the coast of Greenland and teamed with a pair of father-and-son whalers to destroy their own six-hundred-year-old Viking ancestors -- resurrected as zombies by an insidious race of intelligent parasites. Quite a lot for even a tough-talking, two-fisted, former military brat like Jane to handle. But winning their battle against the undead Vikings was just the beginning of the war against the parasitic Draugr now that the relentless creatures have escaped their island prison...and seek to turn the earth into a planet of the living dead. With a sturdy vessel under her feet, a do-or-die crew at her side, and weapons of mass monster-destruction in both hands, Jane takes to the hellish high seas to face down zombie whales and an armada of seafaring ghouls.… (meer)

My goodness. DO YOU UNDERSTAND what kind of a plotting genius you have to be to make the concept of Zombie Whales work!

I mean when I first read the summary for this book, my brow rose and my mouth hung a little slack. "Zombie Whales?!?!", I thought. "Really." But other folks were signing up so I requested THE RAVEN and then went and spent some bucks on the first eBook in this series, THE SENTINEL. And I'm glad I did.

This series isn't Cormac McCarthy or Shakespeare, but it is a rollicking good time if you are looking for a smart-ass heroine who can kick some butt. What I liked about THE SENTINEL was the solid foundation that the author provided. The book starts off as if you were on one of the anti-whaling boats that take on the Japanese whalers on the Discovery Channel. Then comes the fantastic elements, which include zombie Norsemen or draugr. And because of the delay of the 'unusual', it totally worked for me. I found the premise easily acceptable.

Now, THE RAVEN is a continuation of the story as the danger to the world increases as the zombie-process is spread by marine life. Ships go missing and the next thing you know Jane is back in action.

The story is just as much fun in this second book, but I've backed off a bit when it comes to Stars because some of the action is less believable. And, I thought the book was a little long. (But then again, I think most books could be trimmed at bit.)

Principal character:: a smart-ass chick who can kick some butt
Time Frame:: modern
Language:: expect the f-bomb but little that's worse
Humor:: definitely
Creepy:: not really
Disbelief O'meter:: not exactly full-speed ahead, but close

Great series if you love sarcastic heroines that don't fool around.
