Boss of the Lost Souls corporation and Captain Jonathan Cooper, late of the Fleet, find themselves facing off against the Enterran empire in the shape of Elissa Trekow in various encounters over a period of several years. The story isn't terribly linear in that it moves from story present to one of the past encounters, though the encounters themselves do gradually lead up to the big battle in the present and we generally get a few chapters in each setting so you are given a chance to orientate yourself. This can lead to a bit of dissonance, though, as some of the encounters in the past appear to much more lethal than the big showdown and the switching between periods doesn't always give you a chance to catch up with who's survived and who hasn't. ( ) Granted that it's been awhile since I've returned to the "Diving Universe" but what we seem to have here is a bad case of the mid-series blues as this novel just doesn't add that much more to the continuing saga of the main characters and I didn't find the promised confrontation with the dominant empire all that gripping; there is at least some sense that a logical culmination point is in sight. Finished this book in a matter of hours on the day it was released... and now I'm jonesing for more in the Diving Universe! What a blast! Every trip back to this series is an adventure, giving us answers to some questions, and more mysteries. Boss and Coop each have their own stories this time, running concurrently. Boss is diving the Boneyard to find out more about the Fleet, while Coop defends the borders of the Nine Planets Alliance against an old foe with a grudge. And that potentially sets up a new recurring antagonist for the series. I need more in the universe! This is good stuff! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

The answers Captain Jonathon "Coop" Cooper and the crew of the Ivoire seek lie in the Boneyards. But they must wait for Boss and her team to dive it, explore the wrecks, and piece together what happened in that faraway place. Boss loves the challenge. Thousands of ships, centuries of history, all play to her strengths. In her absence, she trusts Coop to defend the Nine Planets Alliance against the Enterran Empire. But an encounter from Coop's recent past shows up to haunt him, an encounter he never told Boss about, an encounter that could threaten her future, his life, and the fragile peace between the Alliance and the Empire. Praise for Skirmishes: "A combination of first-person and third-person narrative and flashback segments makes this a complex and compelling story. It's like having three tales in one, with an added peek into the bad guys' activities, all of them intriguing, classic science fiction. It leaves the reader eager to explore this universe again and see what will happen next with these characters." --RT Book Reviews "The Diving Universe, conceived buy Hugo-Award winning author Kristine [Kathryn] Rusch is a refreshingly new and fleshed out realm of sci-fi action and adventure. And the latest offering...doesn't disappoint." --Dave Dickinson, Astroguyz "The latest Diving Universe science fiction (see City of Ruins, Diving Into The Wreck and Boneyards) is a fabulous outer space thriller that rotates perspective between the divers, the Alliance and to a lesser degree the Empire. Action-packed and filled with twists yet allowing the reader to understand the motives of the key players, Skirmishes is another intelligent exciting voyage into the Rusch Diving universe." --Midwest Book Review "There's adventure, suspense, intrigue, and not a few surprises, all in Rusch's quick, light prose. Boss, as much historian as salvager, reminds one of a Poul Anderson or Gordon R. Dickson protagonist. This is definitely a fun universe to visit: dive in!" --Don Sakers, Analog "There's adventure, suspense, intrigue, and not a few surprises, all in Rusch's quick, light prose." --The Reference Library Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
