Huck Jones, the son of the admiral of the Soaker fleet, has a legacy to live up to. Haunted by the distorted memories of his mother's untimely death, he must face his demons and the man who raised him as he strives to take the courageous step forward into manhood. When he's transferred to the worst-performing ship in the fleet, everything he believes is called into question when he meets a lowly brown-skinned bilge rat girl. Huck walks a deadly rope. Meanwhile, Sadie, destined to be a Rider in the Stormer army, seeks to avenge her brother's death at the hands of the Soakers. Trained hard by her mother, an experienced Rider, Sadie knows strength and determination more than most. Her father, a Man of Wisdom, has shown his cowardice more times than she can count. As her world and family fall apart, she must cast aside her anger and focus on the wisdom she's always brushed off as foolishness. Amidst everything, a plague ravages all, discriminating against no one. When four worlds collide, lines will be drawn, sides will be chosen, victory will be sought. Death will be wrought. The mysteries of the cure for the deadly plague will be uncovered. Who will survive? And what will those who do learn about themselves and the ones they love?… (meer)

A Great great book

What an awesome couple of series! Segwaying from the Dweller to Country series and back to the Dweller....BRILLIANT!!!!!! I wish there were more than just one book left and would absolutely love to see both series made into an HBO series or movie.

Once again David Estes has not disappointed me in this book or in this series! This book was a slight deviation of the previous two, as in this book we read alternating perspectives of Sadie from Storm County and Huck from Water Country. However, the building of suspense, the culmination of characters and worlds from the previous two books are just as artfully introduced and woven into the story.

It's hard to write this review without giving away any of the plot. However, Estes writes solid characters. Men and Women are both strong, emotional, at times reckless but are striving to find themselves in their own worlds. I really like how he writes women to be just as strong and sometimes stronger than the men in their worlds. It's rare for female leads to be strong and in love; at least they're often written as one or the other. Not in these books. They are strong, and can love, and make mistakes. Men can be cruel, and as seen in several of the worlds, very sexist and patriarchal; but not all of them are that way and the women are smart enough to see the difference.

I've decided to take a slightly different approach to the final book, as it is also the final book in the sister series The Dweller series, so I will start that series first so that the final book truly is the final book for me. I don't know if it will make a difference, but given who we were introduced to at the very end of this book I suspect it might.

I look forward to more worlds and answers in the next four books, and will explore more series and books by this author. If his storytelling is consistent, he will find himself at the top of my favorite author list! ( )

Love, love, love this series. This is a wonderful YA series. This time we are introduced to the Water & Storm country people who are always at war. We find out who is receiving the fire country children and how they are using them. There is a major war, which I was in the middle of reading when I realized I had gone over my lunch hour because I was sucked into the story and forgot where I was. I really like all the characters. I like that the women are very strong physically and mentally. There is also humor. I recommend reading all 7 books back-to-back so you keep the flow of the story.

If you like YA dystopia books, please pick up this series. ( )
