Trick, the undercover detective, thinks he has seen it all. He is experienced, takes no prisoners, and is about to finish a three-year assignment when it gets interrupted by some FBI people who think they know better. Trick is pissed. And even though he is attracted to the Fed, Nathan, he takes it out on him. Well, in a way. He still ends up ‘training’ the guy to be more vigilant in future cases, but Trick sure has fun doing it and being more of an a**hole than he has any right to be.
Nathan is young, proud, and still has all the idealism in the world. The ambitions of someone who wants to take down the bad guys and thinks he is well prepared. Nobody has bothered to tell him who Trick really is, and when he cannot seem to resist him, he hates himself. When he finds out the truth? You’ll have to read the book for yourself to find out.
This book is explosive, full of mindf*ckery, and with some very interesting psychological insights into both main characters and their motivations. As an aside: if that is how the FBI really works I now understand why most sane people stay away from them. If you like stories about tough guys, if a bit of cloak-and-dagger attracts you, and if you want to see how these two fix the emotional wreckage left after they out-clever each other (hint: extremely hot!), you will probably like this novella.
