I enjoyed this book. It has the unsettling aspect of a fantasy book: how could the crime have been accomplished without the influence of the supernatural? For a while, I was concerned that the introduction of a ghost, or some such ghoul, would occur to 'explain' the mystery. I needn't have worried: a neat and very earthly explanation provides an entirely satisfactory conclusion. ( )

Cassie Maltham with her husband and two friends have come back to the place that twenty years earlier her cousin had disappeared. Her twelve year old cousin Suzie Ashmore disappeared from the Greenway never to be found. Now another girl has disappeared - Sara Jane Cassidy. Is Cassie guilty of both crimes, and what do her nightmares mean. It is up to D.I. Croft to investigate.

When Chassie Mattham was age ten, she and her twelve-year-old cousin, Suzie Ashmore, decided to take a shortcut home. They went through an old, covered path called The Greenway.

As Cassie related later the things went strange and that she must have lost consciousness. When she awke, Suzie was gone and never seen again.

Cassie has been haunted by the memories of this for twenty years. Now she returns with her husband, Fergus, and friends, Anna and Simon. She wants to confront her fears and find out what happened.

Soon after their arrival, another girl of the approximate same age as Suzie was when she disappeared, this girl also disappears and it's in the same Greenway.

Detective Inspector Mike Croft leads the investigation and John Tynan, who investigated Suzie's disappearance, comes out of retirement to help.

The only link in the two disappearances is Cassie. The police aren't sure if they can trust her. Then she does something heroic but she does it as if in a dream or trance.

The author does a good job in describing the characters and setting but the story line is not really believable. It might be better suited for the paranormal mystery fan. ( )
