Pullman Porters were very important figures in the history of America. This book teaches children and adults who porters were and why they were so important in our history. Porters worked in early train cars, for 70 railroad companies nationwide. They would look, listen and learn from their predominantly white passengers. The artwork in this book is phenomenal. It's "acrylics on canvas with digital finish," and it looks exquisite, these are pages you could hang on your wall (if it weren't for the added text) and admire. Each page I sat there examining the care, truly fabulous, the skill, the incredibly realistic representations, I cannot say enough about how amazing the paintings for these pages are.

The text, though... It's informative, and maybe it's just due to there not being too much else to add, but it feels sparse, lacking in detail.

That said, the artwork alone still makes this worth the look. ( )

Wonderful children's book about the Pullman Porter. I learned a lot. I had known that the Pullman Porter was held in very high esteem in the black community, but this explained why. I didn't realize that they were named after the creator of the first sleeping cars on trains or how involved they were in the Civil Rights Movement. I think this will be a wonderful addition to the library's juvenile collection. ( )
