Nicolas von Bingen and Alex von Hemmerle, titled members of the German aristocracy, have been best friends since childhood. Both widowers, they are raising their children - Nick's two lively boys and Alex's adored teenage daughter - in peace and luxury on the vast Bavarian estates that have belonged to their families for generations. While Nick indulges in more glamorous pursuits, Alex devotes himself to breeding the renowned white Lipizzaner horses that enthrall audiences throughout Europe with their ability to dance and spin on command, majestic creatures whose bloodlines are rare and priceless. But it is Nicolas's bloodline that changes everything, when his father receives a warning from a high-ranking contact inside the Wehrmacht. A secret from the past has left the family vulnerable to the rising tide of Nazism: Nick's mother, whom he never knew, was of Jewish descent. Suddenly Nicolas must flee Germany, wrenching his sons away from the only home they have known, sailing across the Atlantic for a new life in America. Their survival will depend on a precious gift from Alex, their only stake for the future: eight purebred horses, two of them stunning Lipizzaners. In Florida, where Nicolas joins the Ringling Brothers Circus, he becomes Nick Bing, with Alex's prize white stallion -- now named Pegasus -- the centerpiece of the show. A multigenerational narrative inspired by the best-selling author's own family history traces the efforts of an aristocratic German family to find refuge for themselves and their magnificent horses in post-World War II America.… (meer)

This book is very dramatic in the sense that many people died in World War II, but it also has much family connection and romance. I liked it because I like how in touch the family stays and how at the circus everyone gets to know eachother well! ( )

Love historical WWII fiction. This was a little too clean and convenient but I enjoyed it. ( )

Nicolas von Bingen and Alex von Hemmerle live in a world we can only imagine. As titled members of the German aristocracy, they are free to spend their time hunting, training horses, enjoying their friends and family, and living the good life. Their world of privilege comes to a screeching halt as Hitler rises in power. Nicolas discovers an old family secret that sends him and his boys scrambling for a way to leave Nazi controlled Germany. His lifelong friend Alex finds the solution to his friend's problem in his impeccably trained Lipizzaners, gorgeous white horses famous for their grace, beauty, and mindboggling tricks. With little money, few possessions, two Lipizzaners, six Arabians, and his boys, Nicolas flees Germany and joins the Ringling Brothers Circus for a chance at a new life. A beautiful tale of friendship, hardship, love, and loss, this book will sweep you into an enchanting world.

Even for Danielle Steel, this one was very soppy. I don't think there was a couple that met and didn't get married, usually knowing within the week that it was inevitable, even if it took a bit longer to work out the details.

Also none of the Lipizzan story was believable. The Spanish Riding School was buying horses in from other breeders? From outside the Hapsburg lands? Already trained? And she would have done well to include the presence of other Lipizzans in the US from 1937, a year before Nick brings his two in.

This is probably the worst book by Steel that I have read. ( )

COMMENTS: One of Steel's better books, I always think she does the historicals very well. Nicholas von Bingen aka Nick Bing is a German aristocrat. He has never worked and just oversees his estate and lives the life of an upper class gentleman. Nick was raised by his father believing his mother had died. Nick is in his early 40's w/ 2boys and has been widowed. A friend of Nick's father visits him and informs him that his wife was of Jewish descent. This means in the eyes of the German government Nick and his boys are Jewish and at risk. They have little time to plan before finding refuge in the US. Nick's friend and neighbor bred Lipizzaners and gives Nick one and another prized horse. Nick and the boys begin a new life in the circus. Their winter home is Sarasota, FL and they travel the US adjusting to their new life and new home. ( )
