I have a feeling that this should have been somehow combined with the first book of the series to make a proper novel length story. I'd thought the 1st novella served as a nice quick introduction to the series and expected this one to be much longer then it was. Still a decent story and at least Jade's story is unfolding but almost all of the characters from the 1st novella are ignored, and while geek references are still used somewhat throughout the story not a whole lot distinguishes this from other tales of witches and shifters. I hope the further books takes here back to her shop, friends and games.

reread: I still have the same concerns as when I read this for the first time, I'm going to give the 3rd book a shot as the characters are interesting, just they are too short to be marketed as books, more like magazine or anthology novellas. ( )

I'm following along with the audio and quite enjoying this series. If you are a gamer and like DnD, then you're going to enjoy this series. This series was suggested to me by one of my fav authors Tricia O’Malley. I play D&D 3-4 times a month with my husband, daughter and some friends. It came up in some correspondence with Tricia and she suggested I may like this series. I liked this book as it was different and a genre I could relate to. There are quite a number of books in this series so there is a lot of fun and exciting reading ahead. :) ( )

Jade Crow, sorceress and game shop owner, is completely focused on preparing herself for the inevitable coming confrontation with her murderous ex-lover Samir--at least until her father Jasper, who threw her out of the Three Feathers Crow tribe decades ago, comes knocking on her door, asking for help. The Three Feathers Crow tribe aren't just Native Americans of Crow heritage; they are crow shifters. All the adult members of the tribe are crow shifters. They have to be. Those who aren't crow shifters get expelled from the tribe--permanently. That's why Jade was expelled; being a sorceress isn't an acceptable substitute for being a crow shifter.

But now, someone is killing the Crow. One by one, and horribly. The Council sent a Justice--Carlos, a lion shifter who is a friend of Jade's lover Alek, a tiger shifter and another Justice.

Alek hasn't been able to reach Carlos since a day or so before he showed up at Three Feathers, and disappeared.

It doesn't matter how much Jade hates her father. There are too many deaths, too horrific, and a Justice shouldn't just disappear. Neither Alek nor Jade can turn their backs on this.

And once in Three Feathers, they start to learn shocking things--about the tribe, about Jade's grandfather, about what's really going on with the expulsions of non-crow shifters.

And about Jade's own family.

This is a novella, and it's a rough emotional experience for Jade in a short space of time. Yet she also learns a lot about herself, her own personal strength, and the complexities of why her family kicked her out. There's more than one terrible crime here to be solved.

It's engrossing, well-plotted, and Jade's character both grows, and is revealed a little more.

Recommended.

I bought this audiobook. ( )

Jade didn't run away when after she'd exposed herself to the sorcerer who wants to kill her. Instead she chose to stay and fight for her found family. Not long after her biological family shows up asking for help--the family who threw her out of their cult (as she calls it) for not being a crow shapeshifter. She wants to say no, but she can't resist helping. For a short piece, this novella was packed with adventure and had a very solid plotline. I like this series quite a bit. ( )

Finally reread Justice Calling and went on to the next in the series. Nice! We get to meet Jade's original family - the ones who were never mentioned in Justice Calling, before she was on the streets. And it's a nasty situation on several levels. She was raised in a shifter cult (not a normal shifter life, but something weirder); she finds out that things were even worse than she thought when she goes back, with Alek, to help them deal with some very odd killings. She makes some choices, and finds out about consequences; she also finds out a lot of stuff about herself and her past that she had never known. Good story in itself, and it advances the arc - Samir is meddling in this mess. ( )
