This classic series represents the Western canon not without academic controversy. The latest volumes of the Great Books include some women writers, but they are still definitely underrepresented. Nevertheless if one were to choose a cherished set of classic works for a private collection, this would be it. Admittedly, most of the literature within the series one can find more cheaply and with better translations-- buying them piecemeal. Honestly if one plans seriously to read the Great Books of the Western World , a pick highly noted according to Mortimer Adler and his editorial team, one may consider using a magnifying glass for the small print. The most helpful aspect of the series is the two-volume Synopticon, a study supplement comprised of a cross-referencing index of ideas along with introductory essays for the 100 most noteworthy ideas--again according to Adler and staff. For bibliophiles this collection is a trophy. For the ardent scholar it's an occasional reference tool. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
