For fans of Louise Penny, C. J. Box, and Nevada Barr comes a haunting crime novel set in Glacier National Park, where one man finds himself on a collision course with the dark heart of the wild and the even darker heart of human nature. It was a clear, starry night in Glacier National Park. Fourteen-year-old Ted Systead and his father were camping peacefully beneath the rugged peaks and sweeping sky when the unimaginable happened, Ted's father was mauled by a grizzly bear and dragged to his death. Now, twenty years later, as special agent for the Department of the Interior, Ted is called back to investigate a crime that echoes the horror of that night. Only this time, the victim was tied to a tree before the animal's attack. Ted teams up with one of the park officers-a man named Monty, whose pleasant exterior masks an all-too-vivid knowledge of the area. Residents of the nearby community are less than forthcoming. Suspicious of outsiders and intimately connected to the wilderness that surrounds them, they confront their fellow man and nature with equal measures of reverence and brutality. As the days pass with no clear answers, not only is human life at stake, so too is that of a majestic creature who carries with it valuable evidence. Ted's search for truth takes him far into the wilderness, on the trail of a killer, and eventually to a shocking and unexpectedly personal conclusion. Rich in atmosphere and evocative, lush descriptions, The Wild Inside is a gripping debut novel about the wondrously perilous intersection between man and nature.… (meer)

Standard detective/murder procedural made more interesting because the murder itself took place in Glacier National Park and involves a grizzly bear.

I love the parks and I have been to Glacier so the setting and the twist about the bear really worked for me. I enjoyed both detective characters and I think I'll be seeing them both in future books.

I was a longtime fan of the park series by Nevada Barr but that series went off the rails for me. This reminded me very much of the good days there.

I know there is a new book with at least one of these same characters coming out in May and I'm looking forward to it. ( )

When writers of mysteries place their stories in a certain location — London, Paris, New York City or Southern California, for example — the locale often becomes part of the story, almost as if it were another character. And so it is with Christine Carbo's “The Wild Inside” (2015), the first in a series of novels set in and around Glacier National Park.

Ted Systeed, her main character, spent his early youth in Florida, as the author did herself. Then the family moved to Montana, where when he was 14 his father was mauled and killed by a grizzly bear while the two of them were camping in the park. Years later Ted is a special agent for the Department of the Interior.

When a dead man is found in Glacier bound to a tree, and shot, then partially eaten by a bear, Ted is called in to investigate. The location of the crime, so near to where his father was killed, and the fact that the crime involves a grizzly bear impacts him profoundly, making it difficult for him to focus on the puzzling case.

And it doesn't help that the man in charge of the park is the same one who years before had falsely cited carelessness as a contributing factor in Ted's father's death. Nor does it help that the grizzly apparently swallowed the bullet that was in the victim. Will the bear have to be sacrificed to retrieve that bullet?

Carbo nicely balances the detective work with the personal drama, while giving everyone a big surprise at the end. ( )

Interesting story and a very good first novel for this author. I loved that it was set in and near Glacier National Park, an area I know well. I appreciated the detailed descriptions of places like the Two Medicine and Lake Macdonald valleys, plus numerous references to Kalispell, Whitefish, West Glacier and Columbia Falls. My gentle criticism is that some of the dialogue was inauthentic, such as when addicts were psychoanalyzing themselves in conversation, and some phrases (razor stubble, e.g.) were repeated multiple times in the book. The wild inside is a good novel consisting of a protagonist that’s haunted by his past and is forced to overcome said past to solve a gruesome murder. ( )

The story is about a National Park Investigator who's called to investigate a murder involving a Grizzley Bear in Glacier National Park. It's as much about the man himself and his past as it is about the current investigation. Th author brings a detailed knowledge of Glacier Park and the surrounding area and Grizzley Bears as members of this Community to the story. The characters are well developed and there is intrigue and mystery involved in the main character's attempt to solve the mystery of the murder. For me the solving of the mystery was more interesting than the psychological issues the author was presenting. ( )
