Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. Thought provoking and interesting collection of essays. Best suited for die-hard fans of the show who want to revisit it through different lenses. The prose can definitely be a bit academic and dry, so it's worth knowing that going in. This collection of essays was not my cup of tea, mostly because it intellectualized the Tv drama beyond my interest. For sure if you want to delve into the philosophy and psychology behind the scenes of this tremendous show, go for it. The book is well-written and thorough. I didn't get the feeling that they were trying to be accessible to the lay public, so I'd recommend this mostly for those well-educated folks.Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. The extremely popular television program Breaking Bad is placed under a microscope and examined from many points of view - ethically, philosophically, sociologically, narratively. Much too anal for my tastes, but it might be perfect for an audience of novice writers, or sociologists, or rabid and highly intellectual fans of the show. "The Methods of Breaking Bad" edited by Jacob Blevins and Dafydd Wood is a book that will appeal to readers with a wide variety of interests. A few of the disciplines that provide essays for this book are film history and theory, philosophy, ethics, political theory, and economics. These essays can be read independently or all together. The reader does not feel compelled to read the entire book cover-to-cover if a particular topic carries no interest for them. However, the wide appeal of the television show is reflected in how broadly the themes and style of the show accurately depicted and influenced the culture of the early 21st century. Negatively, this book may not interest people who enjoyed the television show on a surface level. Some views likely watched the show because Walter White and Jesse Pinkman were interesting characters and the show itself was presented in a unique and fascinating way. The show, after all, was intended to be entertaining. However, if you are, like myself, interested in a particular facet of the show (for myself this was ethics), you may indeed find this book interesting and helpful. I gave this book a four-star rating simply due to the academic nature of the book. This may be a poor reason for my rating, but I believe the book was hoping to draw a mainstream audience outside of the academy. I do not think that the book fully succeeded in being accessible to the average reader. That said, if I were teaching a class on ethics or English Literature, I would have my students read at least one or two essays from this book. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Vince Gilligan's Breaking Bad is a central work in the recent renaissance in television-making. The visionary scope and complexity of the series demand rigorous critical analysis. This collection of new essays focuses on a variety of themes. Walter White is discussed as father, psychopath and scientist and as an example of masculinity. The essayists examine the series in terms of gender, neo-liberal politics and health care reform, as well as the more traditional aesthetic categories of narrative construction, experimentation, allusion and genre. With television the dominant artistic medium of early 21st century America, Breaking Bad should be viewed as a superbly designed work reflecting widespread cultural concerns.
