Butterfly House is a gentle children’s story of a young girl who rescues a caterpillar from a hungry jay. With her grandfather’s help, they build a home for the little insect to keep it safe, and then watch as it encases itself in a cocoon and later emerges as a beautiful butterfly. Much later in life, when the girl has become an old woman, the butterflies still come to visit her garden, bringing her joy. The last page of the book includes detailed information on how to raise your own butterfly.

This is a sweet story that teaches children the importance of caring for all living creatures. As a new grandparent, I also enjoyed how the girl worked with and learned from her grandfather and the emphasis that’s placed on this family interaction. The illustrations are lovely and compliment the story nicely. The main reason I dropped a star on the rating is that, although I love butterflies (or perhaps because I do), I didn’t find the story quite as engaging as I’d hoped. For the most part, it felt like a step-by-step instruction manual on raising a butterfly from a caterpillar. If this is something you want to do, then it would be a great reference. However, I think I was expecting a little more information on the butterfly itself and how it develops. Still, it was a very gentle, pleasant story that I’m sure kids who like butterflies or insects would probably enjoy. ( )

This book is about a girl who rescues a caterpillar and with the help of her Grandpa builds a house so that it can turn into a butterfly. When she sets the butterfly free, the butterflies come back to that same house and the little girl gets to experience all of the joys that the butterflies bring. ( )

This is a book about a little girl that finds a butterfy at the beginning of its life cycle. Throughout the story the little girl's grandfather shows her how to raise the butterfly and in the end the butterflies all come to her when the season changes. This is a good book because ofthe illustrations that help with the descriptive text that show the life of a butterfly through the lens of this little girl in a meaningful way. ( )

This story is a great read and I enjoyed it for a few reasons ! One of them was the illustrations. Teh illustrattions are very bold and picturesque, strongly contributing tot he meaning of the text. For example, when the little girl and her grandpa were crafting the butterfly house, the picture was painted with many shades of color and was painted on the page just as beautiful as the author was describing it, which brings me to my second reason I lijed the book. The language of the text is verbose and descriptive, allowing the reader to place thmeselves int he book and really picture the surroundings and what is going on. For example, when the author is describing th butterfly, she uses imagery such as " the butterfly was all spotted orange, black and brown as if someone had shaken paints and let the drops fall down." The main message in the book is describing the beauty of the life cycle of a butterfly and how the their beauty is reflected not only in physical being but in kindness as they return to the girl when she is an old woman to thank her for her kindness.
