A little girl and her friend learn thru practice and determination that they can accomplish things that at first seemed unreachable. The big picture in Little Kunoichi The Ninja Girl, is to be great you need to practice hard and work for what you want. I think it's also important to point out that Kunoichi is a girl that is training to be a ninja which is challenging the stereotype that ninja's are usually boys. I thought this was a pretty good book. One reason I like this book was the illustrations are very detailed, and enhance the story. The book is fiction, but the text features remind me of an informational book. For example, on one page there is a detailed map showing the super secret island she lives on, there is a detailed of who her family is, and in the back there is a did you know? section that defines words in Japanese and explains cultural traditions that readers might not know about. This section has drawings to enhance and explain the definitions. Secondly, the plot of the book is well paced and keeps the reader engaged. Little Kunoichi and Chibi Samurai meet and practice really hard to come up with routine to show off their skills at the Island Festival. The plot takes you through all the planning and practice they do as well as the day of the festival. Finally, the book pushes readers to broaden their perspective about ninjas and female gender roles. The author said in the back of the book she grew up reading books about princesses, but this book shows a girl doing something that is thought to be a boy thing to do. It challenges gender roles and shows how a girl and a boy can work together to create something great. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
