From the still chill of a winter night to the 'ra-ta-ta, ra-ta-ta, ra-ta-ta-too' of a lively vegetable stew, these twenty whimsical poems celebrate the joys of a garden from start to finish. A tour de force of imagination, 'I Heard It from Alice Zucchini' invites you to join in the Pea Pod Chant, wander through the Rhubarb Forest, dance with the Dainty Doily Dill Weed, gossip with Alice Zucchini, and hold your breath on the pumpkin's enchanted evening. This magical book is collection of twenty poems set in a very special garden. Each poem is more delightful and cleverer than the next. The book takes you from underground where the radishes illuminate to light way for the earth worms, to high above the clouds where the lightening bugs light the sky to avoid the rain. The illustrations are bright and fun and are the perfect accompaniment for this charming book. ( )

How can you not love a book that begins with this poem:

"In the still chill of a winter night
seeds on the gardener's bench
rattle their packets
with chattering.

'When I grow up,
I'm going to be…'"

In this beautifully illustrated, slim volume of poetry, Juanita Havill takes us through a year of gardening - from the seeds sitting on the shelf, to the early spring pea pods chanting, to Alice Zucchini and some of the other vegetables gossiping in the garden, and finally to the snow covered garden.

This would be a wonderful book to use as a read aloud while studying seeds and plants. This collection would also serve as great examples to inspire young poetry writers.

Here are some lesson links I put together for this book - http://www.teachingseeds.org/1/post/2014/02/i-heard-it-from-alice-zucchini-poems... ( )

Nice collection of poems under the theme of a garden. The poems are mostly whimsical and fun. This book stays with the theme through with poems of varying lengths. Would be a fun bedtime story because it flowed quickly from one topic to another.

This collection of garden poems takes the reader on a garden tour with a little fairy through the entire season of a garden. Readers will enjoy poems about the seedlings, the plants, the weeds, the scarecrow and even the wonderful vegetable stew. ( )

The illustrations are cute and sweet without being annoying and the poetry shows a nice range -- fresh images and rhymes, an understanding of gardening and plants, some funny, some meditative. Nicely done. ( )
