We're Amazing 1, 2, 3 is an age-appropriate introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders for Pre-K and K students. Young students will be familiar with Sesame Street characters like Elmo, and may have seen their new character Julia, a young girl with Autism. The book describes and normalizes some common characteristics of Autism, like flapping, sensory sensitivity, limited communication skills, repetitive language. It also notes Julia's strengths, like a great memory and "good ears." The illustrations are simple and colorful, focusing on the three characters rather than the background. The words, similarly, are simple but clear, efficiently conveying its message that different does not mean worse. The book is nothing spectacular, but would be a good tool for teachers with curious students in a diverse classroom. ( ) Sesame Street is a classic in the lives of so many and now they have a character named Julia who is a little girl with Autism! This picture book uses simple language and familiar characters to explain many of the common characteristics of those with Autism. Elmo is playing with his friend Julia when a new friend Abby comes to join them at the park. At first Abby believes that Julia does not like her because she doesn’t respond but as the three play games, sing songs and get a snack Elmo explains to Abby the many things that Julia does differently including flapping her hands, remembering the words to most songs and getting overstimulated by loud noises. The illustrations are simple and focus on the faces of the characters as they adventure throughout Sesame Street together. This book does an amazing job of explaining the characteristics of Autism and how to be patient with and understand those with Autism. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
