An excellent, eye opening, depressing account of the distortion of public education by the obsession with the illusion of economic efficiency. ( ) I used this as a textbook in an history of American education class at Georgia State University in 1974. The book emphasizes how business was taking over the agenda of American public education in the Progressive era. It was accompanied by a local situation of the period which my professor was writing about, when the Atlanta teachers' union was going strongly against an Insurance executive who had become chairman of the education board intent of using these principles to change the schools to benefit business, or so the teachers thought. Very useful text in this context. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Raymond Callahan's lively study exposes the alarming lengths to which school administrators went, particularly in the period from 1910 to 1930, in sacrificing educational goals to the demands of business procedures. He suggests that even today the question still asked is: "How can we operate our schools?" Society has not yet learned to ask: "How can we provide an excellent education for our children?"
