I have to admit, that I skipped most of this book, it was simply too long and I kept losing my interest. I suspect I'm simply too shallow for it. Definitely not for me. Two stars for my enjoyment plus one for nice writing. ( )

The purpose of its author is, as stated in the preface, "to present the love of God as revealed in His Son, the divine beaulty of the life of Christ, of which all may partake ... even so it is the purpose of this book so to present the blessed Redeemer, as to help the reader to como to Him face to face, heart to heart, and find in Him, even as the disciples of old, Jesus the Mighty One, who saves 'to the uttermost' and transforms to His image all those come unto God by Him". ps. IX, X.

O Desejado já foi considerado pela Biblioteca do Congresso dos EUA como a melhor biografia de Jesus. É baseada nos evangelhos, mas muito mais do que uma biografia, pois a autora vai além da pura descrição de fatos da vida desse personagem, mas penetra em sua vida e missão, apresentando-o aos leitores como o Messias prometido no AT e agora chegado. É também um livro histórico, visto que relata fatos históricos acontecidos na Palestina, num momento determinado, fatos que têm extrema relevância para todo ser humano. Além disso, este é um livro religioso, pois nele descobrimos que tal pessoa é não apenas humana, porém totalmente divino. Ele vem apresentar os princípios de amor do Céu, viver uma vida de perfeição dando exemplo do que pode um ser humano viver, com ajuda divina, e finalmente morrer morte vicária, para pagar o pecado do mundo.
A autora não segue a sequência de algum evangelho a risca; ela procura seguir aproximadamente a vida de Jesus cronologicamente, e apresentar seus ensinos topicamente, agregando informações dos quatro evangelhos. Também trata das profecias do Antigo Testamento que apontavam para Cristo, e enfatiza as conclusões teológicas dos escritores do Novo Testamento, além dos evangelhos. Os capítulos são curtos e diretamente ao ponto. Em cada capítulo, a autora apresenta um episódio ou ensino de Jesus, e faz aplicações espirituais e práticas à nossa vida. Considero os capítulos iniciais, os quinze finais e alguns do meio como especialmente importantes e reveladores, especialmente aqueles que descrevem os últimos dias de Jesus e sua morte na cruz.
É praticamente impossível ficar imune ou isento ao que é apresentado, pois tem-se aí palavras de vida que enobrecem e elevam. Isso não apenas porque o tema abordado é a Palavra de Deus, e esta tem poder, mas também porque a própria autora é também qualificada pelos adventistas do sétimo dia como profetisa, chamada por Deus para cumprir um propósito definido para esses tempos finais. Em uma passagem do livro (p.58), a autora diz: "It would be well for us spend a thougthful hour each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point by point and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones". Eu considero a leitura deste livro é uma das melhores ferramentas para cumprir esse exercício espiritual.
Este volume é apenas um das dezenas que já foram publicados de sua autoria, e faz parte da série de cinco volumes intitulada "Série do Conflito", mas considero um dos mais inspirados, uma verdadeira obra prima da literatura religiosa. Coloquei esse volume como um dos 20 livros que eu levaria a uma ilha deserta para passar o resto dos meus dias.
Em 2021 estou lendo-o pela quinta vez, três vezes em inglês, e duas em português, e pretendo continuar voltando a ele outras vezes, pois a cada retomada, sempre é possível encontrar nova luz, novos insights, e ser desta forma revigorado espiritualmente. Na qualidade de material inspirado pela mente divina, é um livro que está muito acima de qualquer ser humano, e não pode deixar de elevar quem o lê com desejo sincero de absorver e praticar suas verdades.
Quanto ao texto em si, é extremamente bem escrito, no que concerne aos princípios de composição e estilo. Cada parágrafo apresente claramente um tema principal, que pode ser percebido ao identificar as palavras chave e seus sinônimos, que . E o tema de cada parágrafo se relaciona com o tema dos parágrafos antecedentes e posteriores em uma relação progressiva, demonstrando a habilidade da escritora, e o cuidado com que ela produziu sua obra. Percebe-se também que houve bastante revisão para se chegar ao resultado final. Sabe-se que Ellen White tinha um time de auxiliares que ajudavam na revisão do texto, atentando para detalhes de gramática, precisão, concisão e estilo. Tudo isso, mais a inspiração do alto contribuíram para tornar este livro um verdadeiro clássico da literatura religiosa. ( )

White's writing is often a mash of anecdotes with Bible verses and lessons from the life of Jesus shoehorned in. If I had a friend who was interested in Christianity, this is not the best starting point, as it assumes the reader is already familiar with general Christianity and the Bible. ( )

The whole of sacred history is centered on one individual, Jesus Christ, either through the prophecies and sacrificial meanings of the Old Testament or the good news of His life and message in the New. The Desire of Ages is the seminal work of Ellen G. White’s Conflict of Ages series in which the birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is examined in great detail to show the love of God for man. Through over 800 pages of wonderful, engaging writing the 33 years of when the Son of God walked shoulder-to-shoulder with man.

The Desire of Ages is not a strict chronological retelling of the Gospels; instead it is a more in-depth look into the life and teachings of Christ to reveal the love of God for man. Yet, while White focuses on Christ’s mission to save man and show the true nature of God she does not shy away from explaining the challenges Jesus faced during His ministry. The Messianic expectations of Jewish culture before, during, and after Christ’s life were fully explained by White and how throughout His ministry it hindered his efforts to turn hearts to the Father. Alongside the cultural expectations was the hatred of the religious establishment that saw Jesus as a threat to their authority even though mean thought He might be the Christ. And finally the hardest burden Christ dealt with was His disciples whose earthly expectations and resulting disappointment continually saddened their Teacher.

The Desire of Ages is the central volume of the five-book Conflict of Ages series just as Christ is the central pillar of sacred history. For many, including myself, Ellen White’s book on the life of Christ is best spiritual book on His life outside of the Bible because of the in-depth perspective she writes and expounds upon. At the end of the book as heaven rejoices at Jesus triumphant ascension to rejoin His Father as our mediator, White reveals how the disciples returned to Jerusalem just as joyously knowing Christ reigned with His Father. Through the Acts of the Apostles the good news of Christ would begin to be spread around the world. ( )
