Taking a lonely back road, they are assailed by the hulking Hell Cop (C. J. Graham) and Rachel is kidnapped and taken to Hell where she is lined up as a bride of the Devil (Patrick Bergin) or Beezle as he’s known here. Taking advice from Sam (Richard Farnsworth) of “Sam’s Last Chance” petrol station, Charlie gets myself tooled-up and heads down the highway to Hell to take on all the fiends of the pit in order to rescue his beautiful girlfriend. The script by Brian Helgeland is great fun – odd, quirky and populated by any number of strange characters and bizarre situations. Director Ate De Jong grabs these elements and runs with them conjuring up a road trip through an idiosyncratic desert Hell that is full of weird and wonderful imagery and even weirder characters. These include Ben Stiller as a chef with a penchant for cooking eggs on the pavement and Runaway and metal icon, Lita Ford as a crazy, sexy hitchhiker. There are genuinely witty and funny sequences and there is always something going on the background to provide a chuckle of two. All this is assisted by Robin Vidgeon's bright and breezy cinematography that easily captures the vast expanses of desert that make up this particular version of Hell. The leads are appealing – Chad Lowe makes for a likably bumbling and wimpy hero and although Kirsty Swanson has little to do other than look pretty, she does it with consummate style. All-in-all, “Highway To Hell” makes for a creatively offbeat little movie full of eccentricities and some great horror-comedy touches. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
