Fiction. Mystery. HTML:When a mud marathon champion bites the dust, Meg Reed has to go the distance to make sure a killer comes clean . . .

Back home in Portland, Oregon, Meg is ready to take her career as an outdoor writer for Extreme magazine to the next level. Lesser journalists sling mud—Meg plans to run through it. To train hard for Mud, Sweat & Beers, an extreme 5K mud run, she's signed on with the Mind Over Mudder team, run by ten-time mud marathon champ—and former drill sergeant—Billy the Tank. But when Meg finds her tenacious trainer dead in the locker room, she has a sinking feeling someone may have been pushed too far. Digging through the hidden secrets at Mind Over Mudder is a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it. Meg will have to tread carefully, though—or she may soon be running for her life . . .

The mystery is fine, but too much of a to-be-continued ending, especially if you're reading a book from a used store and not expecting to find or search for the next volume to see how it all ends. Frustrating ! ( )

I really like Meg, that’s why I keep reading this series. The mystery in this book was underwhelming the murder turns out to be an accidental drug “overdose”, a supplements user takes a dangerous drug unknowingly.
A large focus of this book was on the series wide mystery of Megs father Pops, death. If you haven’t read the first three books in the series much of the overarching mystery may be confusing.
Something I find odd
Gam is supposed to be this very intuitive, new age, spiritualist. If Sheriff Daniels is involved in Pop’s death either as the killer or as an impediment to the investigation why does it take Gam, three and a half books before she begins to have doubts about him. Hopefully we’ll get an answer in the next book.

Love the Portland setting. Loved the lunch near the Salmon Springs fountain. The standalone mystery was pretty weak, and the maddeningly slow developments in the multi-book mystery did not seem to match with earlier developments. I really wonder if this author plotted out that larger mystery, because this time that larger mystery seemed to take some sharp turns. ( )

First Degree Mudder by Kate Dyer-Seeley – Four Stars! – is the 4th book in the Pacific Northwest cozy series.

Meg Reed, the protagonist, is a journalist who was very desperate for a job, any job, as a writer. So desperate,in fact, that she has been greatly exaggerating her prowess as an outdoor adventurer, so she can land and keep a position with Northwest Extreme magazine in Portland, OR.

In First Degree Mudder, Meg's latest adventure, she has decided to participate in a 5K Extreme Mud Run – but since she's not in shape for any kind of 5K, she first has to endure a mud-run-training boot camp. Her struggles make for some humorous moments, and a very fun read.

There is an ongoing mystery plot throughout the series, in addition to each book's solved-at-the-end mystery. I can't wait to find out what happens next, in the big-picture-plot. I am really looking forward to Book #5!

Note: I received an advanced review copy of First Degree Mudder, and voluntarily reviewed it. All opinions shared are 100% my own. ( )

Kate filled this book with wit, charm, and such realistic moments that I couldn’t help but read it quick. Now, that I have I am wanting more. The characters are perfect! Truly, it has been a long time since I have read a book with a variety of characters that have all become a favorite. Even the murderer- (You did know this was a murder, right?) I mean when was the last time you could say that you really did love the evil villain, and it was because the author did such a fabulous job of writing. The setting makes me want to be in the Northwest, and smell the fresh air.
All in all, this book is beyond 5 stars alone. It is at least 8. Readers that enjoy charming cozies, with witty characters and laugh out loud moments should quickly go download or order this book!
