Equal parts mail art, data visualization, and affectionate correspondence, Dear Data celebrates "the infinitesimal, incomplete, imperfect, yet exquisitely human details of life," in the words of Maria Popova (Brain Pickings), who introduces this charming and graphically powerful book. For one year, Giorgia Lupi, an Italian living in New York, and Stefanie Posavec, an American in London, mapped the particulars of their daily lives as a series of hand-drawn postcards they exchanged via mail weekly--small portraits as full of emotion as they are data, both mundane and magical.Dear Data reproduces in pinpoint detail the full year's set of cards, front and back, providing a remarkable portrait of two artists connected by their attention to the details of their lives--including complaints, distractions, phone addictions, physical contact, and desires. These details illuminate the lives of two remarkable young women and also inspire us to map our own lives, including specific suggestions on what data to draw and how. A captivating and unique book for designers, artists, correspondents, friends, and lovers everywhere.… (meer)

Una experiencia diferente que parte de una idea tan siple como la correspondencia entre dos amigas. Increíblemente inspirador y original. ( )

This book is an eye-opener! I've been doing standard graphs in Excel for many years, mostly just 2-dimensional representation. In this book, you will find so many creative ways how to display complex information, that does not necessarily have numerical values. And it's fun to read - all the data is related to our daily lives. ( )

Giorgia Lupi, an Italian woman living in New York, and Stefanie Posavec, an American woman living in London, are both information designers. They began a yearlong correspondence of tracking, drawing, and sharing their personal data through postcards. "Dear Data" is the beautiful result of their correspondence. I saw the authors speak last year and was inspired to try one of their data experiments, counting the animals you see.

The two authors, both highly acclaimed professionals in the field of data visualization, undertook a year-long project of collecting weekly data on aspects of their lives and communicating them to each other in hand-drawn visualizations on postcards. The book collects the 2 x 52 postcards with some annotations. It is quite charming and inspirational, mostly in the sense of indicating the wealth of possible topics for data collections. The visualization concepts tend to be somewhat repetitive.
