Bishop Nigel smiled at me. 'Holy water doesn't harm vampires. Which is just as well, as it would make it impossible to baptise them.' When I was asked by a dragon to give him the last rites, I never dreamed it would lead to negotiating with his cannibalistic family or running from snail sharks. Life as the priest of a small English village is quite tame in comparison. At least I have Morey, a gryphon with sarcasm management issues, to help me. And if all else fails, there's always red wine and single malt whisky. As if my life weren't complicated enough, a darkly beautiful dragon named Raven keeps appearing where I least expect him, I've met a handsome police inspector who loves science fiction as much as I do, and my younger brother is getting into trouble for trying to pick up vampires. That's what happens when you're dealing with an incredible and dangerous parallel world full of mythical creatures. And I have to learn to navigate it all without losing myself, or my brother...… (meer)

Well written

This is a very interesting story with a different spin on urban fantasy. A female vicar (Church of England, I guess) ministers to people and creatures. There is a large amount of religious discussion, some that made me want to grab a bible and check for unicorns - that's how good the writing was. Very complex characters and intriguing interactions.

The only quibble: the central mystery is only partially solved.

If you a rabidly atheist or staunchly against any hint of scripture in your fantasy, don't read this.

It's not proselytizing, though. It's more looking through the day to day life of a small church preacher. ( )

There were parts of this book that I personally really enjoyed, there were parts that I was meh about, and there were parts, that were not Biblical.
I would recommend this book, to a small group of people. Sheltered Highschoolers who plan on going to college. They need to be aware of what they will run across and this book is an excellent example.

I probably will continue reading the series because I have more of it, but I wouldn't seek it out and if I ran across it I wouldn't get it. ( )

As a fan of Dragonriders of Pern, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Harry Potter, I thoroughly enjoyed The Temptation of Dragons. It begins with a widowed Vicar of a small parish encountering a dying dragon who asks for last rites. Penny White sets aside her shock to obey her calling and administer last rites.
The details of life as a vicar were so believable that I wasn't surprised that the author is a priest in a small church in England. The day-to-day drudgery of committee meetings contrasted wonderfully against the vicar's encounters with creatures of myth and fantasy. What a joy to enter this lively, enchanting story world.
Gotta go. I'm off to buy the rest of the series! ( )

What a fun and enthralling adventure! There is a lot to love in this charming story, not the least of which is the references to so many fandom favorites that will make connections with many readers. This incredibly creative and exciting tale also has believable characters and relationships between them, which adds depth to this multi-genre expedition, which should appeal to a variety of readers. Wonderful & imaginative. ( )

Parallel worlds, dragons and an English vicar...oh my! An unexpected hero, Penny White, vicar, deals with the mysterious death of a dragon from a parallel world, meets her snarky familiar, Morey and even adopts a shark snail. A delightful and fun read. ( )
