The Romani people have gone by many names, but had most commonly been refereed to as Gypsy which unfortunately had a negative connotation. The book touches briefly on the struggles and discrimination that Romani had to face. These hardships became a main reason why many of the Romani continuously traveled, never settling in one place too long. Through this book, I learned more about their language, beliefs, law, and occupations. I really enjoyed the layout of this book. Each page felt unique, had its own theme, and was visually inviting. The text was written in short, but informational pieces. All of the pictures and maps in the book helped me further to understand more on the Romani history. I think elementary readers would like this book especially due to its format and layout. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

A thousand years ago, a group of people who later became the Romani were driven out of northern India by an invading army. This group then took to traveling the world, adopting words, cultural customs, and religious beliefs from the people they encountered. Romani authors Hristo Kyuchukov and Ian Hancock explain why Gypsy is a scornful name and why they prefer to be called Romanies. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
