I might be biased because I love Christmas and the holidays and the togetherness it brings, but I enjoyed this story so much. I love the setting, and that the little grandchildren curl up to their grandfather, awaiting a story of his best Christmas. I think it creates a feeling of home and warmth for the reader, almost as if they can feel themselves there, with the fireplace burning, the cold air outside, and the sound of a tea kettle in the kitchen. I think the story that the grandfather tells is so touching, and the way that the author uses him to tell the children as opposed to just telling us the story, really makes a huge difference in how the reader feels it. The illustrations are wonderful in this story and really paints a clear picture of what took place on that Christmas night in 1914. ( )
