"More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers--men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need. When one of the remaining airships is damaged in an electrical storm, a Hell Diver team is deployed to a hostile zone called Hades. But there's something down there far worse than the mutated creatures discovered on dives in the past--something that threatens the fragile future of humanity." --… (meer)

I can't express how much I enjoyed this book, well I started the second book after the first because of *gasp* what just happened at the end of this book. I like the world setting, I enjoyed the characters and overall I could feel the desperation of everyone that was launched out as a helldiver.

Have the second and third book ready though, just a warning because this is one hell of a ride that you won't want to get off. A good binge series :) ( )

I think the author did a really great job describing the hell that Earth had become. I really felt for these characters and wanted them to survive through all the horrors. The Sirens haunted my nightmares! The only thing I would change would be to make the Hive hear X's call when he made it back up in the air, but I see why the author made this choice. I will definitely read the next installments. Thanks to NetGalley for providing a copy in exchange for my honest review! ( )

This book was amazing. Not only the narration was spectacular (I am in love with R. C. Bray's voice and narration style), but the plot was fast and thrilling and the writing was on point. The one thing I have to praise this book for is the worldbuilding. It very rarely stops to explain something to you, but it shows you time and time again what this post-apocalyptic world is like, what the stakes are, how's life inside a ship, how's the environment below and so on. I felt for the characters time and time again, their hardships, the way they tried to overcome them and their bravery.
Now, there are two things I would love to have explained and that are a bit off for me, like:
- Why on Earth is there a class system like that inside the ship? surely lower deck kids could receive education and be productive members inside the ship. Even if you don't need 500 engineers, surely the education couldn't hurt. If lower decks people are frailer and riddled with cancer or deformities they can't be hell divers, but there must be something they can do with their lives other than starve, be resentful and ignorant of the real status of the ship.
- What are the sirens? I want a detailed account of their evolution. It's the least believable thing because this is set about 250 years after the nuclear war, and I don't get how anything can evolve that quickly. At first I thought they were humanoid, but then they had wings so I wonder if they are birds or something... I need more info

Anyways, I can't wait to get my hands on the next one and see maybe if I get the explanations I want. ( )
