I had no idea who Leonard Nimoy was, but this biography greatly explained his life and made me interested in a topic I had never read of before. Leonard, or Lenny, was a third grader in the year 1939 when he was asked to sing "God Bless America" to open his school's talent show. His parents had previously immigrated to America and lived in a settlement house. They were Jewish, and all of his friends were of Christian religion. While his friends went to church on Sundays, he attended shul. He watched as the men in front would say their prayer chants, even though he was not supposed to. He learned from them a symbol that stood for "peace," the Hebrew letter shin. Growing up, he sold newspapers and took photos--these are things he greatly enjoyed doing. When he was 17, he began auditioning for every play he could find--he truly enjoyed acting. He later moved to Hollywood, and he was cast in a tv show called Star Trek in 1965. Leonard introduced the shin as a symbol of peace in the second season of Star Trek with his famous line, "Live long and prosper." Leonard loved to act, but his parents did not understand. Leonard's parents were immigrants trying to survive and live the best life in America. Leonard moved to Hollywood where he could get more opportunities to become an actor. All his hard work paid off and one day when he was offered the role in Star Trek. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

A moving biography of the late Leonard Nimoy, the iconic Spock from Star Trek, whose story exemplifies the American experience and the power of pursuing your dreams. Once there was a boy named Leonard who loved to sing and to act. His parents were immigrants who felt like aliens in America, and certainly didn't understand Leonard's drive to perform. "Learn to play the accordion," his father told him. "Actors starve, but at least musicians can eke out a living." But Leonard reached for the stars . . . and caught them. He moved to Hollywood, where he took acting lessons, and drove a taxi and took every role he could get. He worked hard, learned his lines, showed up on time, and studied his craft. Until one day he was offered the role of an alien science officer on a new TV show called Star Trek.Leonard knew what it felt like to be an alien. But did he want the role? Fascinating is the story of how one boy followed his dreams to become one of the most beloved figures of our time. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

A very short children's book which my 9 year old daughter bought to write a biography book review. The Star Trek bug rubbed off on her from me and Spock is by far her favorite character. The book has some interesting little tidbits, including the origin of the Vulcan greeting. An enjoyable read for elementary school kids and Trekkies alike. ( )
