A fatal accident at the circus sparks an insurance investigation that leads John Nieves, a former New York cop, to a list of murder suspects. It seems that The Great Rollo, beloved of millions, had enemies... both at the circus and among his own family. All that is surreal and magical about the circus brings out Nieves' deepest fears, blinding him to the very real danger that is closer at hand. A bizarre series of revelations and coincidences keep Nieves' suspicions of the circus people high, even after the actual evidence suggests that the incident really was only an unfortunate accident. The furtive actions of Rollo's wife and brother, the beneficiaries of his insurance, lead Nieves into even dirtier family secrets. Apparent attempts on his life from all quarters threaten Nieves, but he refuses to drop the case until the whole truth of who killed The Great Rollo is revealed.… (meer)

The Great Rollo, a lion tamer with a traveling circus, is killed during his performance by an agitated tiger. John (Juan) Nieves is the insurance investigator sent to check things out before payment can be given to the beneficiaries. Everyone John speaks to claims Rollo's death was an accident, but John's former NYC cop instincts tell him that he's not getting the full story. He decides to investigate furhter, but it will be hard to prove it wasn't an accident and the circus community is a tight knit group that watches out for their own and don't care for outsiders snooping around. This is proven by the close calls John encounters while on circus grounds. Will John find out what happened to Rollo before soomething happens to him?
I really enjoyed reading this book. I love anything that has to do with the circus, and this was just as entertaining. The plot kept me hooked, and there were a few red herrings to keep me guessing. I couldn't wait to see how it would end. The ending itself is a bit predictable, but it didn't keep me from liking it.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )

I wasnt sure what to make of this book at the beginning. The plot line was unusual but the story quickly gripped me. I loved the ending, rooting for the hero always makes a good book ( )

5/5 stars

This book has everything – humour, mystery, and a bit of danger. An insurance investigator is sent to look into the death of a lion tamer at the circus, where he finds more suspects than he knows what to do with and starts to question his own life-choices. I love cozy mysteries and this book fit the bill perfectly. Setting it in a circus was different, but the quirky characters were likeable (even the creepy clowns) and the ending made me smile.

Summary: Recommended to anyone who likes the circus, mysteries, and cats.

Suspenseful and Intriguing, a read full of that circus/mystery novel feel. At times funny, at times downright scary. I loved it! ( )

This was a quick, easy read about a death of the circus lion tamer and how John, an insurance agent, has to determine if it was an accident or murder, and if his insurnce company will pay the beneficiaries. While doing this he meets creepy clowns, knife throwers, large cats and almost gets killed. And then there's the surprise ending. I was provided this book free for an honest review - thank you. ( )
