"Thousands of books have been written about the latest and greatest diets that will help people lose weight and improve health. But a key element in any successful nutritional health program is a tried-and-true method that most people haven't thought about--yet it could be revolutionary for taking health to the next level. This ancient secret is fasting. Fasting is not about starving oneself. When done right, it's an incredibly effective therapeutic approach that produces amazing results regardless of diet plan. In fact, Toronto-based nephrologist Dr. Jason Fung has used a variety of fasting protocols with more than 1,000 patients, with fantastic success. In The Complete Guide to Fasting, he has teamed up with international bestselling author and veteran health podcaster Jimmy Moore to explain what fasting is really about, why it's so important, and how to fast in a way that improves health. Thousands of books have been written about the latest and greatest diets that will help people lose weight and improve health. But a key element in any successful nutritional health program is a tried-and-true method that most people haven't thought about—yet it could be revolutionary for taking health to the next level.

In The Complete Guide to Fasting he has teamed up with international bestselling author and veteran health podcaster Jimmy Moore to explain what fasting is really about, why it's so important, and how to fast in a way that improves health. Together, they make fasting as a therapeutic approach both practical and easy to understand.

The Complete Guide to Fasting explains: why fasting is actually good for health who can benefit from fasting (and who won't) the history of fasting the various ways to fast: intermittent, alternate-day, and extended fasting what to expect when starting to fast how to track progress while fasting the weight loss effects of fasting how to ward off potential negative effects from fasting
The book also provides tools to help readers get started and get through their fasts, including a 7-Day Kick-Start Fasting Plan and healing liquid recipes.

I am currently fasting and did not find my choice of fast in this book but it was invaluable in other ways and I even found two recipes I might try. ( )

Clear benefits from fasting. Enough tips and programs to accommodate any schedule.

The boring part is that 80% of the book wants to convince you that fasting is good: well if I picked it up it means I’m already convinced.... ( )

Behind every youtuber, every blogger, every guru about fasting, the secret they all at one point or another reveal, is that they are all followers of Jason Fung.

Based on GoodReads reviews of both books, I almost didn't read this book, picking up The Obesity Code, which Fung released 6 months before this one, instead. Don't make the same mistake. This here is hands down THE BEST BOOK on losing weight EVER. It is so much more detailed and at the same time concise than The Obesity Code. It is readily apparent after reading both of them, that he really just took all the material from the first book, responded to criticism and quieries, and then re-released the updated edition as this book. It is a whole new book, however, because it is so much more concise. He cuts out so much filler from the original that really slowed it down. And all the best recipes from his The Obesity Code Cookbook? They're included here too! He really takes it all just that little bit further, filling in all the gaps and questions I still had after the Obesity Code. There is no need to read it. Just this one. There were a couple typos and syntax errors near the end of the published version of The Obesity Code, which left the impression that his publisher probably didn't help him any with editing. Well, with The Complete Guide to Fasting, we get the self-edited version AND IT IS GREAT!

What's more, Fung's approach as a public health professional is so much better than everyone else trying to make a name for themselves in the field. You leave understanding why Raw (lower sugar), Paleo (whole foods), and Warrior (intermittent) diets all sort of work; he accessibly explains "why" to you; and based on that understanding leaves you with flexible guidelines that empower you to take your own decisions and adapt your diet on the fly yourself. He is not overly restrictive, prescriptive or dogmatic and fills the book with praise of other professionals in the same space - helping build a movement and community to spread these ideas in the public realm.

This really is *the* book! ( )

Literally a life changing book. About 5 1/2 months ago i started OMAD. OMAD is eating just one meal a day. It's a form of intermittent fasting and corresponds to the one in Dr. Fung's book which he labels 20:4 intermittent fasting. I've lost 40 pounds and 3 inches around my waist so far. The amazing thing is that this is not a diet. I can eat what i want, but just during my 4 hour eating window. My insulin resistance is going down. I'm a type 2 diabetic and right now using about 1/3 the insulin daily that i was using before. My blood pressure is coming down. My doctor was very impressed with my weight loss, but even more impressed that my hba1c had gone from 6.7 to 5.6.

The essence of what Dr. Fung communicates in this book is that we gain weight and become diabetic because of high insulin levels, which comes from eating too often and eating too many carbs. The solution is very straightforward. Your body needs time to recover from the overwhelming amount of insulin and it can do this through fasting. He discusses fasting for 2 times a week, 3 times a week, intermittent fasting (where you eat every day, but spend most of the day not eating), and finally, toward the end he discusses longer term fasts like for 1 to 2 weeks. I'm having such good results i've not felt a need to try anything like that. I honestly think i can eat one meal a day for the rest of my life.

If dieting hasn't worked for you (and it really doesn't seem to work long term for hardly anyone), this is something i can highly recommend. He spends some time discussing the Biggest Loser TV show and why there has never been a reunion show, and why there never will be one. All but 2 of the participants to date have gained back all their weight. Cutting calories and exercising does not cause weight change which lasts and he explains why. ( )
