In just a few years, green roofs have gone from a horticultural curiosity to a booming growth industry -- primarily because the environmental benefits of extensively planted roofs are now beyond dispute, whether for industrial or governmental complexes or for private homes in urban or suburban settings. Despite the high level of interest in green roofs, until now there has been no reliable reference devoted exclusively to the various species of drought-tolerant plants that are suitable for use on extensive green roofs. Green Roof Plants fills that void. The book contains photographs and cultural information for more than 200 species and cultivars of plants, including valuable data on moisture needs, heat tolerance, hardiness, bloom color, foliage characteristics, and height. Concise, accurate, and easy to use, this book is destined to become an indispensable practical reference guide, not just for architects, landscape designers, engineers, and environmentalists, but also for environmentally conscious home gardeners.… (meer)
With 88 pages of explanatory text, the bulk of this book is dedicated to a Plant Guide which gives general descriptions along with color photos of over 200 species or cultivars. That plant guide does not give more than a cursory list of "North American Natives"--but North America has a wide variety of plant communities so what is "native" in one area may not be in another. To be fair, the text does explain why they have omitted a focus on native plants: a roof garden is not a typical native plant habitat and most of our plant species are not adapted to survive in such a place. The text chapters address: Benefits & Challenges of Green Roofs, Design and Construction, Vegetation & Plant Selection. In addition, this book provides a short list of seed & plant nurseries, an extensive bibliography, and an index. caveat: I have not built a green roof, so cannot comment on the construction chapter.
This is an outstanding resource both for green roof designers and engineers. Ed is a superb plantsman and has an equal knowledge in areas of green roof engineering, substrates, and other tangential issues. ( )
