In the mid-1900's, Dr. William Bateman, a Ph.D. in chemistry, spent his retirement years experimenting with weaving. He was not content with exploring only traditional, known weave structures. He developed several new ones that have become known as "Bateman Weaves". They include such names as Park, Boulevard, and Extended Divided Twills, among others. Texts and other information on these weaves are relatively scarce. Bateman Weaves, The Missing Monograph, is an introduction and summary of these remarkable weaves. The monograph covers both Dr. Bateman's approaches and those of the author to appeal to a more contemporary audience. Whether used as a guide or as a stand-alone text, The Missing Monograph fills a void in the weaver's library that includes:- A summary of unique weaves created by Dr. Bateman: Park, Boulevard, Chevron, Blends, Extended Divided Twills, Extended Manifold Twills and Multiple Tabby, all in one monograph.- Basic blocks for all weaves- Over 150 full-color images- Ideas for going beyond the basics - Extensive bibliography… (meer)

If your your interest has been piqued by the Weaving Innovations book, you may want to learn how to create your own personal patterns based on Bateman's block systems.

Complex Weavers has a Bateman Study Group which started in 2011. Over the years, members of that study have recreated Bateman's samples and also created originals based on Bateman's block systems. The author of this monograph, Linda Tilson Davis, was a member of this study group and realized that there were limited resources for handweavers to learn about the samples and how they might be interpreted by modern weavers. Linda starts with the premise that a reader will not have access to the Virginia Harvey monographs (indeed they are difficult to find and expensive to buy). This monograph is a condensed explanation to help the weaver navigate the different Bateman systems.

One chapter in the book gives a selection of approaches to using the book.
A Serendipitous Approach – Software or Drafting Paper
A Methodical Approach – Software Preferred and Most Efficient
A Technical Approach – Software Mandatory
Under each heading are steps you can utilize for the design process. Linda also gives advice on Yarn and Thread Choices.

This monograph takes the original Bateman samples and shows the weaver/designer how to expand the various Bateman systems to more than 8 shafts. It also includes an extensive bibliography of books and publications about the Bateman weaves and other resources that are an adjunct to this monograph. Finally, it details where the sample collections are housed and how a weaver or guild might be able to borrow or view them. ( )
