This is a biography of Maurice Sendak. He was born June 10th, 1928 in Brooklyn. He would grow up to be one of the most well known children's book authors and illustrators. He learned to love drawing when he was a child. His brother was in WWII. His first job was at FAO Schwarz as a window decorator. He soon began illustrating books and then moved on to writing his own. He wrote and illustrated Where the Wild Things Are in 1964 and it won the Caldecott Award. Sendak loved dogs. He passed away in 2012 on May 8th but he will live on forever in his books.
Personal Reaction to the book
This was an easy read. While it was short it also covered many key points in Mr. Sendak's life. I love Where the Wild Things Are and when I grabbed this book I didn't even realize he was the author. It was nice surprise and enlightening to learn about the author of one of my favorite childhood books.
Classroom Extension Ideas
1. In the classroom, Read a Maurice Sendak book and have children illustrate in a story board assignment.
2. In the classroom, Allow younger students to create their own wild things monsters out of crafting supplies after reading the book. ( )
