An Affair with a Notorious Heiress
3 Stars

Not one of Heath's better books.

Alastair "Rex" Mabry, Marquess of Rexton, insists on marrying a woman without reproach but finds himself unwillingly attracted to Mathilda "Tillie" Paget, a scandalous divorcée. Much of the first half is dedicated to both the hero and heroine's internal musings on why their attraction is problematic and the disastrous consequences if they give in to it. This leads slows the pacing and results in unnecessary and irritating repetition.

Thankfully, the pacing in the second half picks up once the "big secret" concerning Rex's agreement with Tillie's uncle emerges, and the romance finally gets going. The relationship between Rex and Tillie is sweet and the hero-in-pursuit plot is entertaining overall.

The final installment in the series focuses on Tillie's sister and Rex's brother, who are so very different. It will be interesting to see how they fare with each other. ( )

I hadn't been enjoying this series as much as the Scoundrels generation before them, but I really enjoyed this book. I believed the evolution of their conflicting feelings and their developing affections. I liked their backstories and motivations. A good HEA. It was just nice. I would consider rereading it at some point. A+ ( )
