Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:

When American teen Kit Bridges moves to England to attend an elite equestrian boarding school, neither she nor her new home will ever be quite the same.

Trying to move on from her mother's death and afraid of riding after a bad fall, plucky fourteen-year-old Kit Bridges doesn't quite know what to expect when her father takes a position at the prestigious Covington Academy. A fancy new boarding school in England where she and her dad can make a new start sounds promising. But in addition to her cool, possibly secretly royal new roommate and the boys with charming accents . . . well, she hadn't accounted for the strict headmistress, Lady Covington. Or the expectation that every student be a rider. Or the wild horse that she seems to have a strange and special bond with. While navigating new friendships, romances, and an alarmingly austere new environment, Kit needs to figure out whether she's ready to get back in the saddle. And at the end of the day, it's hard to tell who will be more changed by her arrival â?? Covington Academy or Kit herself.… (meer)

I put in for an early review copy of this book in a fit of nostalgia for my horse mad phase. Kit and her father move from the American west to an English boarding school where the father is going to be the new stable master. Kit gets free tuition to the school but finds it hard to fit in as a free spirited boho chick who doesn't ride any more. A hard to control horse takes a shine to her (er, and seemingly understands her when she talks to him) and the headmistress tasks Kit with learning to compete on this horse or he'll be sold. Kit's terrified of riding due to an accident where she was dragged behind a bolting horse, and her nemesis in the school is tutoring her. It's a co-ed school and there's some incipient romance as well as some class stuff (upper class British vs royal Indian vs rough and tumble western North American vs lower class British). It's very much an update to modern times of the high school new kid story, but it just didn't sit right with me. There felt like there were too many authorial moments of ignorance, too much manufactured drama, and plot holes galore. ( )

Remember when horse stories were like the Harry Potter of the last decade? This book goes back to that time. Unfortunately, this doesn't have the same charm as Black Beauty, the Misty books, or even the Saddle Club. Some teens will certainly enjoy the characters and story, but it doesn't stand alone well. It jumps around a lot and doesn't seem very interested in quality. ( )

This was a cute and enjoyable YA book. The heroine was the stereotypical "rebel" who doesn't want to follow the rules and is so concerned about "being true to herself" that she runs afoul of the adults in the story. i.e. she doesn't like the school uniform, so adapts to suit herself, and then is surprised when she ends up in trouble. That common plot line aside, the story follows an American girl as she navigates her way through an English boarding school, making friends, and coming to terms with life. The characters are likeable and although they do tend to be the standard cast of characters one would expect in this type of story, there is a bit of depth to them. Overall a fun, light read. ( )

I was interested in this book since I am a huge fan of the Thoroughbred Series. Unfortunately, nothing is as good as the "original". This is more modern and obviously not horse racing, but seemed hard to follow as the flow jumped all over. While this may be based off a TV show, it doesn't seem like something that would catch my attention after reading, if I was a teen interested in horses as I once was. I appreciate the attention to horses and the magic they provide us though and am glad there are still books out there like this topic, but hopefully more interesting ones to come! ( )

Interesting book that seems to be the start of a series. Set in a British boarding school but clearly in recent times as indicated by the inclusion of technology like cell phones in the story. It would probably be of greatest interest to teen & preteen readers. ( )
